Feeding Geese Could Land You a Citation, Soon
The Port Washington Common Council is expected to vote on the ordinance prohibiting the feeding of waterfowl and migratory birds on Aug. 20.
Port Washington officials took their first 'quack' at banning the feeding of ducks, geese and other migratory in public spaces in the city on Tuesday.
An ordinance outlawing the feeding of "waterfowl and migratory birds," was introduced to the Common Council during its Tuesday night meeting. Though the ordinance means violators could be fined, an amount has not yet been determined.
Officials first considered the issue at a July meeting, worried about the damage the birds cause because they hang around too long every year.
Birds who are used to having plenty of food available will ignore instinctive migratory patterns, Ald. Bill Driscoll said, meaning the area where they are living does not have time to recover from waste and damage caused by the birds.
The council will hear the second reading and take a vote at its Aug. 20 meeting, according to an Ozaukee Press article.
