Feeding Geese in Port Could Cost You $500

Port Washington officials approved the ordinance prohibiting the feeding of ducks, geese and migratory birds on city property.

It is now illegal to feed ducks, geese or other migratory birds on city property after Port Washington officials approved the law that also adds fines of up to $500.

The ordinance was approved during a Common Council meeting last week, according to an Ozaukee Press article. Fines for feeding the birds on city property will range from $100 to $500.

Officials decided to take up the issue after concerns about mess created by the birds as well as the impact such activity has on the birds' instincts.

Birds who are used to having plenty of food available will ignore instinctive migratory patterns, Ald. Bill Driscoll said, meaning the area where they are living does not have time to recover from waste and damage caused by the birds.
