Hwy. 33 to Make Lane Switch on Thursday

Traffic patterns along Highway 33 will switch to the outside lanes as construction workers prepare to finish up the portion of road between Summit and Portview drives; the crew is also proposing some night time paving as part of the project.

Traffic along Highway 33 in Port Washington will shift to the outside lanes on Thursday as crews come closer to finishing work that has kept a  since early April.

Port Washington City Engineer Rob Vanden Noven said the portion of road between Summit and Portview drives will reopen at the end of the day May 25; any work needing to be finished after that day will be completed "under traffic."

The Port Washington Common Council on Tuesday night also approved possible night paving for the highway project.

"With the amount of traffic we have on 33, (the Department of Transportation) recommends we pave it at night," Vanden Noven said, adding that he thought the night paving will likely consist of not more than two nights of construction.

The DOT will return to the council with additional details on expected dates and times for the operation, however Vanden Noven said some suggested times had been to close the road either from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. or perhaps from 9 p.m. until 7 a.m. Saukville has also already approved the nighttime paving.

Ald. Jim Vollmar said his concern about the night paving is for the homes just off Hwy. 33 in Port; if the paving starts near the intersection of Hwy. 33 and Interstate 43 and then moves toward Port, this would mean roadwork would take place outside of a residential area at 2 or 3 in the morning.

Vanden Noven, however, is hopeful that the DOT would begin the work in Port and move towards Saukville.

The Highway 33 project calls for  from South Tower Street in Port Washington to the Milwaukee River overflow bridge in Saukville. The road will be widened to four lanes with a median, and three roundabouts will be added at the intersections of Highway 33 and County LL, Highway 33 and Northwoods Road, and Highway 33 and Market Street.
