As part of local residents were able to collect 10,332 items — or 8,126 pounds of food — to benefit The Food Pantry in Port Washington.
The Stamp Out Hunger food drive celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, and has collected more than one billion pounds of food since its inception in 1993. Last year's efforts netted 70.2 million pounds of food, the eighth consecutive year that at least 70 million pounds were collected, according to its website.
United States Postal Service mail carriers collected food items that were left in bags on the mailboxes on Saturday.
