Michelle Obama's Speech Was 'Riveting,' Official at DNC Convention Says

Waukesha County Supervisor Larry Nelson checks in with Patch from the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.

The Democratic National Convention has been jammed packed full of activity in Charlotte, NC, with thousands of Democrats backing President Barack Obama standing for the president during the event.

For former Waukesha mayor and Waukesha County Supervisor Larry Nelson, a Wisconsin , Michelle Obama’s speech Tuesday night stands out.

“It was an incredible speech,” said Nelson, a former English teacher. “It was given in a very conversational, low-key style, but I think that is part of why it was so moving. Everyone was riveted to what she was saying. It was clear how sincere and personal she was.”

Michelle Obama “really made the case for re-electing President Obama,” said Nelson.

While the last week in Tampa, FL, had a strong focus on Wisconsin with Congressman Paul Ryan having received the GOP vice presidential nomination, Wisconsin still stands out to Democratic leaders, said Nelson. National speakers have been taking the time to visit the Wisconsin delegates every morning, he said.

“I think that the quality of national speakers taking time to come to our morning caucuses is a recognition that Wisconsin is as swing state and is really important for both candidates,” Nelson said.

Even political buttons, such as a “Cheeseheads for Obama” button that has drawn attention, show that Wisconsin is a target for both parties.

“It is clear that Democrats across the country have been concerned about what is happening in Wisconsin,” said Nelson, who drew attention in 2008 when as mayor he endorsed Obama for president. “It is clear at this convention that everybody’s eyes are on Wisconsin in terms of what has happened with the recall with the governor and public employee rights.”

That’s why Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, who is running against former Gov. Tommy Thompson in the U.S. Senate race will receive prime-time play when she gives her speech Thursday night before Obama accepts the nomination.

“That is going to be an important speech for Baldwin,” Nelson said. "I think that if she does well, that will help her with fundraising from all over the country from people who see her for the first time.”
