New County Building Opens in Port

The new Transit Services building has been fully operational since mid-August, but held an open house on Saturday for residents to learn about its services. Find out what's going on inside the newly built walls.

The following information was provided by Transit Superintendent Jason Wittek.

The new Transit Services building has been fully operational since mid-August. The building's public entrance is open each weekday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The public is able to purchase Shared-Ride Taxi or commuter Express Bus passes during those hours.

The building houses Transit offices, taxi dispatchers, a drivers break room, and a storage area and wash bay for our 23 shared-ride taxis. The new building allowed us to consolidate all of the Shared-Ride Taxi drivers and dispatchers and taxi manager all in one building. Our Shared-Ride Taxi Service is operated by Specialized Transport Services (STS). STS currently employees nearly 40 drivers, 6 dispatchers, and one taxi manager.

STS has done an excellent job providing taxi service to Ozaukee County! STS has successfully managed the increase in ridership in 2012 due to the absorption of the Port Washington service area. Thanks to STS’s dedication the Shared-Ride Taxi Service is on pace to provide over 90,000 rides in 2012, an increase of over 10,000 rides.

In addition to the new building, the project incorporated a public pocket park adjacent to the Transit Service building for use by residents and trail users. The Interurban Pocket Park is a public space incorporating benches, built-in seating, bicycle racks, water bottle filler, and edible landscaping. The pocket park also adaptively re-uses the steel crane structure from the former Modern Equipment building to define the space and incorporate the industrial history of the site. A bench shelter and vegetative scrim wall also re-use steel from the former ME building.
