One Candidate Emerges for Opening Mayor Spot

Ald. Jim Vollmar has decided he will run to become mayor of Port Washington, while Ald. Dan Becker still deciding.

Ald. Jim Vollmar has emerged as the sole candidate for the next Port Washington mayor when the spot opens up in April.

After nine years in office, Mayor Scott Huebner has decided it's time to pass the baton to a new city leader in the coming election season.

"I’d like the thank the mayor for his service to the city," Vollmar said during Tuesday night's Common Council meeting. "I think you want to leave the city a better place than when you got here, and I think you’ve done that."

Ald. Dan Becker has also spoke openly about considering the position, but such a role would require that he cut back on his involvement elsewhere.

"I am split, and ... (for) several reasons," Becker said, explaining becoming mayor would involve a strategic balance of family, work and extracurricular activities, which includes other government roles, such as his seat on the Ozaukee County Board.

Becker said he plans to decide in the next 7 to 10 days whether he will run after having a few more conversations with family and friends about the decision.

While Vollmar confirmed that he would be running, Susan Westerbeke, deputy clerk for the city, said no one — not even Vollmar — has taken out the necessary nomination forms from her.

The forms are due by Jan. 3. The election, which is April 3, for the Port Washington Common Council, Saukville Village Board and the Port Washington-Saukville School Board.
