Parking Lot Swap Falls Through
The City of Port Washington and Daniel Ewig, the developer of the Boerner Mercantile Building, had discussed a property deal that would have created more parking downtown — but it fell through.
A deal between the city and business owner Daniel Ewig for the purchase of the M&I Bank drive-thru property that was planned to be turned into a city-owned parking lot has fallen through.
The Port Washington Common Council on Tuesday night met in closed session to the discuss the issue, and inevitably voted not to move forward, an Ozaukee Press article said. The lot that will now remain Ewig's to service the Boerner Mercantile Building has 44 stalls, while the M&I property could have been configured into 69 spots.
The deal had already been delayed after results from an environmental test from Konicek Environmental showing chemical compounds in the soil.

The site used to be home to an auto dealership, according to City Administrator Mark Grams. At that time, gasoline tanks were also housed on the property. The dealership was razed in the 1970s, and the M&I buildings were constructed in the 1980s. When this happened, it's likely that the tanks were not drained and instead were filled with sand — a common practice at the time, Grams said.
