Port Washington Senior Center Hopes to Make Move in May

Port Common Council approves Commission on Aging's recommendation for construction company.

The Port Washington Common Council approved J.H. Hassinger Inc. of Menomonee Falls to handle the Senior Center's renovations, according to Catherine Kiener, director of the Port Washington Senior Center.

The Commission on Aging had recommended J.H. Hassinger Inc., who was also the at about $230,000.

The center will move from its near downtown location in the historic firehouse to 403 W. Foster St., which is also Franklin Energy's former location

"The biggest time-consuming part of this project is getting the renovations for the elevator, and then doing the shaft work for the elevator and waiting for the elevator to arrive," Kiener said.

She said the center hopes to make its move sometime in May, tenatively thinking construction will take three months from the project start date, but she understands that flexibility will only help her cause.

Because of potential construction holdups and necessary inspections for the elevator, the move-in date is "going to have to be fluid," she said. "I don’t want to think about all the things that could derail it."

The Common Council will have to meet with the company to draft contracts before the work can get started, she said.
