UPDATE: Power Restored to 700 Affected By Outages from Snow Storm

Winter storm brings thunder snow, power outages to Port Washington and Saukville.

Power has been restored to the roughly 700 people affected by outages throughout Port Washington on Friday night, according to the outage map on the We Energies website.

As of 10:40 p.m., We Energies spokesperson Barry McNulty said about 10,000 customers were affected by outages statewide, mostly because of wet, heavy snow.

At about 10 a.m. Saturday, We Energies sent out this Tweet: "We've restored power to about 30,000. Just 1,300 to go, but new outages are being caused by wind and snow-laden limbs falling on wires."

Outages in Port started about about 9:30 p.m. Friday according to the We Energies website. Six different outage locations were reported in Port, though McNulty said the area most affected is just north of downtown, along North Franklin Street and North Wisconsin Street.

Also about 9:30 p.m. Friday, several residents reported flickering lights and power outages after Patch posted on Facebook, saying, "Did anybody else just see those three flashes of golden yellow light that filled the sky in Port? No idea what is was, super weird!"

Some commenters wondered if the yellow flashes were due to a transformer blowing.

"I heard a transformer blew near the bike trail and 1st street," Connie Wieting Pals posted on Facebook. "A friend said she heard it on the scanner. ... It was WAY bigger than a transformer — it lit up the entire sky. I was in my car when I saw them."

"There are tons of power outages, so it could have been a few different transformers blowing," Sarah Gonzalez posted on Facebook. "The white on everything makes it alot brighter."

McNulty said he cannot confirm whether a transformer blew in Port, but said such problems have been confirmed in other parts of Southeastern Wisconsin.

"It's entirely possible, we’ve had a few go this evening," he said, adding that the moisture and heavy snow is part of the problem. Crews also faced 20 to 25 mph winds throughout last night's storm.

About 6 to 10 inches of snow accumulations were expected from Friday night's storm, according to the National Weather Service.

The snow has already claimed one event, as Port Washington's boys basketball regional game at Waupun was moved from Friday night to 1 p.m. Saturday.
