Students at Saukville Elementary School will continue to be offered a free breakfast option thanks to a second donation from the Saukville Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber donated $1,364 to the Free Breakfast Program that is open to any student in need of some grub. The money is a portion of the proceeds raised during the Saukville Scare 5K Run/Walk in October.

"In keeping with our goal of connecting business, government and community, we decided to commit a percentage of our profits from this event to something benefitting the community," Chamber Executive Director Sherri Yandry said in an e-mail to Patch. "This year, we chose the free breakfast program at Saukville Elementary."

Saukville Elementary Principal Chad Brakke said the school has been able to run the program full-time for about two years now, and had offered it off and on before that. The free breakfast is offered to any student, and income requirements are in no way considered.

"There's always students who, for whatever reason, don't get breakfast at home, and even just for those familes who have a busy scheduled and it just doesn't fit in ... it provides the opportunity (for them to eat)," he said. The program generally feeds anywhere from 15 to 40 students on a given day.

The program was initiated by the school's parent group, and runs purely on donations and parent volunteers.

"It's kind of a challenge because you can't purchase stuff that's going to go bad … you're purchasing stuff every day," Brakke said. Breakfast meals range from waffles to cereal, breakfast bars or poptarts.

The third Saukville Scare 5K Run/Walk drew 202 participants and ultimately raised $11,200. Learn more about the latest event.
