Donations Key in Purchase of New Grand Piano

The Port Washington-Saukville School District music department purchased a lightly used grand piano after donations of $62,000. The department hopes to offer the piano for use by local piano teachers and for evening piano concerts.

The Port Washington-Saukville School District music department can now hit some new notes after the purchase of a new grand piano.

The piano, which cost $62,000, was purchased through funds raised with the "Key contributors" program, music teacher Dennis Gephart said, which includes local businesses, family, alumni and supporters of the Port Washington-Saukville music program.

"It's in emaculate condition," Gephart said of the lightly used piano,"it hasn't left the original person's house since it moved in." A brand new grand piano can cost $100,000 or more.

The old grand piano was sold for $6,000 to Jefferson High School, and Gephardt said money from that sale will be used for upgrades in the auditorium.

The first concert using the piano will likely be the Thomas Jefferson band or high school concert in December, Gephart said. In January, the department hopes to have an afternoon or evening to work with local piano teachers to use the instrument and also hopes to offer evening piano concerts, inviting Milwaukee area pianists to perform.
