Downtown Gets Youthful Eye as Students Join Main Street

Three Port Washington High School students will serve 2-year terms with the Main Street program.

Port Washington Main Street and the high school are teaming up in a partnership that will hopefully be beneficial to the students as well as the community.

Freshman Jared Bruttig and Junior Azariah Pargulszi will serve on committees, auditing the program's business development, marketing and promotions committees. Junior Alexa Greisch was chosen to sit on the Board of Directors, and though she won't be a voting member her ideas will be highly valued, Main Street Executive Director Sara Grover said.

"It's exciting for the downtown because you're going to be interacting (with many people) and you're going to be a voice for your peers and getting the school district as a whole more involved," Grover told Greisch after announcing her selection for the position. "Without the youth investing in the community (its) future (begins to look) bleak."Β

Greisch is the first youth in Port Main Street's history to sit on the board, Grover said. Greisch has a lot in her background that helped her qualify for the spot, but pointed to her strong leadership through DECA, initiatives with the Lions Club, previous work with the Rotary Club and the fact that she's run pom pom classes on her own.

"We look to her for very strong leadership and integration with the community," Grover said.

Bruttig has experience creating websites and also doing online fundraising through gaming activities, and Grover is hopeful that can help the board branch out from some of the more traditional ways it already approaches these tasks.

Pargulszi hopes to open his own business in the health industry, Grover said, and he's also done a lot of volunteering and scouting in the community that will make him a good fit on the board.

Both Main Street and school officials are also hopeful that this experience will lay a stronger foundation for the students' futures.

"We really want this to be a significant impact on your resume," Grover said.Β

The three student positions are two-year terms, and the program is something that will continue with new elections at that time.

Main Street is a nonprofit organization that supports businesses within this community.Β According to it's website: "Our mission is to enhance our community identity and heritage, to further develop a center of activity and to ensure economic stability in the historic district of Port Washington through dedicated efforts of organization, promotion, design and economic restructuring."
