Lincoln Elementary Raises $300 for Diabetes

Students made donations in the amount of 50 cents — or more — in order to be able to wear a hat during school hours as part of the Caps for a Cure program.

students raised more than $300 to donate to the cause of finding a cure for diabetes through the school's "Caps for a Cure," program.

The school raised the money by donating 50 cents (or more) so that they they could wear a hat during school, according to parent Monica Rowley.

"Kids wore the usual baseball caps but some kids mixed it up by wearing bonnets, summer hats, a chicken little hat, cowboy hat, sunflower hat, jester hat, bunny ears, chef's hat, rain hats and a fiber-optic, lit hat," she said.

District parent Pat Knowski started Caps for a Cure three years ago; her daughter, Shannon, has had diabetes since she was an infant. Shannon also gave a speech to her class about diabetes, Rowley said.

The money will be donated to JDRF — a global organization focused on type 1 diabetes research, according to its website — during this summers Walk for a Cure at the Milwaukee Zoo.
