More Port Grads Taking ACT Exam
Test scores remain steady at Port Washington High School despite increase in participation.
A higher percentage of graduates took the ACT tests in 2011 than any year since 1997, but scores from the test remain mostly constant, according to data released Wednesday by the state Department of Public Instruction.
This year, 74.3 percent of seniors participated, up from 68.1 percent in 2010.
The 2011 seniors averaged a score of 23.4, up from 23 in 2010. Scores for the school have remained between 22.4 and 23.5 since 1999. The 2011 statewide average was 22.2.

Former Port High Principal Duane Woelfel — for the district — said the district is happy to see the increase in scores, which brings them back to 2008 levels.
Woelfel said this was the first year the school offered practice ACT tests to all juniors, which hopefully will continue to benefit students before they take the real exam.
