No Word Yet on Action Facing Teachers Who Called in Sick

Port Washington High School principal says everyone showed up on Friday.

Port Washington High School classes were in full swing Friday, despite continued protesting in Madison that had motivated roughly half the staff to call in sick on Thursday.

“We had a good day today,” Port High Principal Duane Woefel said. “We had 100 percent teacher attendance; the teachers taught their curriculum.”

About 35 teachers called in sick at the high school Thursday, and a number of staff also were absent from other district schools.

Teachers called in sick to , which calls for most public employees to pay higher costs for health care and to contribute more to their pensions. It also eliminates most collective bargaining rights.

Superintendent Michael Weber had said Thursday that all teachers who called in sick that day would face consequences.

The district's administrative council met Friday afternoon, but Woelfel said no decisions were made on the sanctions, and the council plans ongoing discussions.
