Port High Principal to Take Position as Director of Special Services

Principal Duane Woelfel will fill the administrative spot vacated by Gary Myrah.

Come July 1, Port Washington High School Principal Duane Woelfel will step down from his position and assume the role of director of special services for the Port Washington-Saukville School District.

The decision was approved unanimously by the School Board at Monday evening’s meeting.

The only internal candidate for the position vacated by Gary Myrah, the hiring committee felt strongly that Woelfel was the ideal person for the job — having spent nine years with the district and previously serving as the head of special education services for the Northern Ozaukee School District.

“We’re beyond confident that he’ll do a good job,” School Board President Patty Ruth said.

Woelfel will sign on for a two-year contract and serve as one of the district’s three administrators, along with Superintendent Michael Weber and Director of Business Services Jim Froemming.

Together these three, who make up the smallest administrative team for a district this size in the state, oversee curriculum, technology and human resources.

Of the new member of the district’s administrative team, Weber said that he admired Woelfel’s “passion to help those who struggle.”
