Schools Encourage Students to Walk to School Thursday

Dunwiddie and Lincoln schools have set up routes as part of International Walk to School Day.

As part of International Walk to School Day, officials at and are encouraging students to walk to school together Thursday along designated routes.

Lincoln students will gather at 7:45 a.m. at at the intersection of Whitefish Road and Nelson Drive. The group will then walk north on Nelson Drive to the school.

Dunwiddie students can meet at three different locations at 8 a.m: the parking lot at 1407 W. Grand Ave.; the intersection of Grand Avenue and Tower Summit; and the intersection of Westport and Portview drives.

According to the International Walk to School Day website, the idea took root in Chicago in 1997 to garner support for the idea of walkable communities. In 2002, nearly 3 million walkers participated internationally, including all 50 states.

On Thursday, people will walk for many causes, including safety, environmental health, personal health and community engagement.
