Senior Football Player Hopes to Inspire Tradition

Player Nick Godersky organizes senior-hosted breakfast to welcome freshmen, equipped with pancakes and raffle prizes.

football players shared some team spirit between bites of pancakes and shouts of raffle prizes on Tuesday morning during what senior Nick Godersky hopes will become an annual Freshmen Football Breakfast event.

Godersky decided to organize the event a few weeks ago as a way to foster a relationship between the seniors and the freshmen — something that he said in the past had felt mostly nonexistent.

"We're going to be freshmen in college (next year), and (we're) hoping there will be people to help us (in this way)," he said.

Only senior and freshmen football players were invited to the event, Godersky said, with the exception of one junior player who will be responsible for organizing the breakfast next year.

"It's the first time, so we wanted to start a tradition to show leadership," Godersky said.

The breakfast also included trivia questions relating to the high school and football team, such as: How many letters are in the name of the city and mascot combined? When was the last time the team went to state? How many seniors live in Port Washington versus Saukville?

Raffle prizes such as chocolate bars, Gatorade, Pirates T-shirts and vintage Pirates apparel were given out throughout the trivia. Two grand prizes included a senior-signed football and Pirates helmet.

"Everyone's going to win, so don't feel bad," the group of seniors encouraged before beginning the trivia and raffles.

Donations from local businesses and organizations helped make the event and prizes possible. Those include: , and — all in Saukville — and the high school's booster club as well as Coach Tim Greisch.

Godersky isn't sure which college he will attend next year, but is looking at North Park University in Chicago, with potential plans to obtain a sports degree with an emphasis on human performance or follow a career path in criminal justice.

For now, he and the team must focus on the current season and school year. The team started its season on Aug. 19 and has a victory and a defeat, and first day of school for the district is Thursday.
