Stress Workshop Will Give Parents a Helping Hand

Middle school guidance counselors know that stress is inevitable, and with an informative session, they hope to alleviate it.

“Stress is unavoidable,” said guidance counselor Susan Michel.

However, with the Helping Students Cope with Stress workshop, 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the middle school, Michel and her colleague Jerry Pittz hope to provide parents with tips on how to help their children cope.

Having students visit frequently due to stress, Pittz knows that it’s an inevitable part of growing up.

“We want to assure them that stress is normal,” Pittz said.

The informative session, targeted toward middle school parents, will provide attendees with information on the causes and types of stress.

“Stress is different for everyone,” Pittz said, so different strategies will be explored at the session.

Michel highlighted several activities that students can use to reduce their anxiety levels.  She said that music, sports, and journaling can be a big help for kids.  And at the workshop, there will be meditation tips and a guided progressive muscle relaxation.

WIth different strategies and some knowledge about the basic psychological components of stress, Michel and Pittz hope to give parents a good understanding of how to help their children.

“Stress can run your life,” Pittz said, but with the workshop, parents can help their children take back control.
