4th of July: Local Suggestions from a Business Near You

Suggestions for your Fourth of July celebration from the Shop Port, Think Local group.

It's hard to believe that the 4th of July is already upon us. It seems like just yesterday we were all hoping for warm weather; now we're in the midst of a stifling heat wave with no end in sight. However there are plenty of things to do around town over the holiday.

Here are a few suggestions:

1. Start the day off at the . The parade kicks off at 11 a.m. and runs through downtown to the lake. If its too hot on the parade route, duck into one of our downtown local businesses, cool off and check out some great local products.

2. Check out the beaches. Both the North and South beaches are open and are a great way to stay cooler by the lake. Take the kids down, let them splash around, and best of all admission is free!

4. Grill out! It is almost a necessity to grill on America's birthday. Your local store has all your grilling needs on sale: Ground chuck 85% $2.99/lb for 3lb packages, sweet corn 6/$1.98, Bush's beans 3/$4.98, Lay's chips 2/$4, and a variety of savings on all your alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverage needs.

5. Fireworks! Once you've had your grilled feast head downtown and check out the fireworks display at dusk. Find yourself a good spot (don't forget the mosquito repellent) and cap off your 4th of July when the fireworks light up Port's sky!
