Pirates Take Lead in 3rd Quarter But Can't Hold On

The Port Washington boys basketball team held close all game against Nicolet, but struggled to put forth a consistent effort.

The game was as messy as a teenager's bedroom, and the mess finally caught up to the Port Washington Pirates.

Nicolet got revenge for a December loss with a 50-41 boys basketball victory on Thursday at Port Washington.

"I think we played good defense overall but we gave the ball away too much," said Pirates head coach John Bunyan. "We were up by eight with five minutes to go and it just slipped away."

Nicolet led for most of the game until Port Washington junior Sawyer Mosley sank a 3-pointer to give his team a 30-27 advantage. The Pirates built that lead Bunyan referenced but when Raheem Lemons made a three-point play, the Knights took a 41-39 lead they wouldn't give up.

Port Washington senior Eric Graff hit a clutch 12-footer to bring the score to 44-41 with just 40 seconds left in the game. Nicolet made its free throws down the stretch, however, to hang on for the victory.

Luke Schueller and Joe Burbach each had eight points for the Pirates.Β

"If we'd hit a few more free throws it may have been a different game," Bunyan said.Β

The Pirates fell to 7-10 (4-6) and are at Milwaukee Lutheran on Friday.
