Port Runners Finish in Top Quarter at State Championships

Jason Marhal took 31st and Bianca Benkley took 36th in the state competition.

Two Port Washington High School runners raced in the WIAA State Cross Country Championships Saturday at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids, both finishing in the top fourth of their Division 2 races.

Junior Jason Marhal took 31st of 151 boys, finishing in just under 17 minutes with an average mile pace of five minutes and 28 seconds. He had a strong second half of the race, having been in 97th place at the one-mile mark, and 44th after two miles with just 1.1 miles left.

Bianca Benkley took 36th of 152 girls in the state competition. She stayed in the top 50 for most of the race, steadily gaining on her opponents. At the one-mile mark she was the 41st runner. In the next mile, she advanced to 39th place, and in the last half mile shaved off three more runners, putting her at a finishing time of 15 minutes and 44 seconds. Her mile pace was 6 minutes and 20 seconds.
