No Doubt: Dieringer Dominates to Capture Third Title

A spectacular showing at the WIAA State Championships for Port senior Alex Deiringer as he comes home with the 145 pound championship.

Port  Washington senior wrestler Alex Dieringer came to Madison with the expressed intention of leaving with his third state wrestling champitonship. He did just that on Saturday, beating Kasey Einerson from Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln in a 13-2 major decision to win his third championship, this time at 145 pounds, in his fourth trip to the statewide showdown.

“It’s a lot better (to win) this year than last year,” said Alex Dieringer moments after his victory. “I wanted to go out with a big bang. I think this might even be more special than any before.”

For almost three periods Dieringer dominated Einerson with moments of ferocity, scoring with numerous takedowns and he almost pinned Einerson a couple of times.

On Friday Dieringer beat Ryan Gartner, a junior from Wilmont, 16-3 in another major decision. He finished his high school career with an astonishing 182-4 record at Port Washington.

“Some guys struggle to get better throughout the year and they only make it to a certain level,” Dieringer said. “I train all year round so it helps.”

“I think (Einerson) wanted to wrestle on the edge and we weren't going to do that,” Port Washington coach Angelo LaRosa said. “When that happened we wanted to push him out of bounds, so that was one of our strategies.”

LaRosa said he has enjoyed a good relationship with his seniors, including Justin Meins, who took third place at 125, and Dieringer.

“I guess it’s kind of sad to lose a senior,” said LaRosa said. “But Alex is moving on to bigger things. It’s time for him to do more.”

Dieringer will take his dazzling wrestling skills to Oklahoma State in the fall.

"Sometimes wrestlers like Alex get so good they tend to try some flashy moves at times, and I’m not saying that’s always a good thing," LaRosa said. Wrestlers like that can do so much whenever they want to, I think they try to mix things up a bit."
