'Arrrr' You Interested in Seeing Some Live Reptiles?

The Port Washington Common Council tentatively approved the inclusion of a live reptile tent at Pirate Festival this June, pending appropriate insurance and other credentials from the company who would provide the attraction.

A last minute request for permission was the reason that live reptiles were not allowed at the annual Pirate Festival in Port in 2011 — and that same scenario nearly ousted the attraction again this year.

The Port Washington Common Council on Tuesday discussed a special request to host the live animals at the event because of an ordinance that bans live animals from all city festivals. 

While the council approved the inclusion of this attraction pending final approval by City Attorney Eric Eberhardt and City Adminstrator Mark Gram upon receipt of proper insurance and certification from the company — two aldermen voted against this decision.

Ald. Joe Dean and Ald. Doug Biggs agreed that they were frustrated with the lack of information about the company bringing the reptiles, as well as the quick time frame — especially considering lack of time was a problem last year.

"I'm 95 percent of the way to vote, 'yes,' but I would like to have more information to vote 'yes,'" Dean said
