Charter Fishing in Port: Cracker Jack Draws Diverse Clientele

Cracker Jack Charters' Captain Bill Walters serves quite the international clientele and, according to him, that's what makes his job most enjoyable.

Walters, of Kohlsville, has been fishing out of Port for 40 years and chartering for the last ten — during retirement. Essentially, he needed a job, and fishing was something he enjoyed.

"Before retiring, I fished for recreation," Walters said. "But, then I decided to get my captain's license, and I've been building my clientele ever since."

And it's quite the clientele.

Walters said international clients certainly don't come around often, but he has chartered for some from places such as Japan and Italy, and he has seen some business from expatriates from Belarus living in the St. Paul area.

"That's the nice part of the job," Walters said. "It doesn't happen all the time, but just enough to make it really enjoyable."

Walters' has a 27-foot boat, modest compared to some other charters in Port, but for Walters it gets the job done. The boat has an open feel, and the bells and whistles to boot.

Walters belongs to the Charter Captain's Association of Port Washington. His rates start at $225 for a three-hour afternoon trip for three to four people.
