Petri Comments on President Obama's Budget

U.S. Representative Tom Petri (R-WI) comments on President Obama's Fiscal Year 2014 budget proposal

Washington, D.C.—U.S. Representative Tom Petri (R-WI) made the following statement about President Obama's Fiscal Year 2014 budget that was released today:

"The President's budget appears to be a compilation of old ideas that have either been rejected or lead to higher deficits… or both.  It just goes to show that the President meant it when he said "balancing the budget is not my top priority."  Higher taxes—no matter who they're targeted at—will not solve the fundamental problem that the government spends too much.  And, the President's entitlement reforms and cost cuts should not be contingent on tax hikes.  At the end of the day, the fact is the President's budget is still two months late and the congressional budget process is already well underway."

Petri, who serves as the Chairman of the House Highways and Transit Subcommittee, also made specific comments about President Obama's surface transportation proposals in the budget.

"The President has spoken about his transportation funding priorities before but has never really specified a realistic, sustainable way of pay for it.  The President indicates he wants to use savings from reduced overseas military operations to pay for infrastructure improvements, but this is not a long-term solution and only further emphasizes that we're spending more than we're taking in.  General fund transfers have already been the norm to make up for revenue shortfalls in the Highway Trust Fund.  I want to fix the nation's roads and bridges too, but we need to identify a responsible long-term fix, and that's what the Transportation Committee and the Highways and Transit Subcommittee will be working on."
