State Bank of Newburg Celebrates 100 Years

Remembering the State Bank of Newburg's history in honor of its 100th birthday.

William Taft was president, the Philadelphia A's won the 8th World Series and Ray Harroun won the very first Indianapolis 500 car race with an average speed of just more than 75 mph. The year was 1911 and the State Bank of Newburg began serving the banking needs of its community.

John J. Reichl was elected president and continued to serve as president for the next 51 years, although he never worked at the bank.  He was the owner of Reichl's General Store in Newburg.  In 1926, the bank advertised for a CEO.  F. P. Isselman applied for the job along with 15 other applicants.

Isselman got the job, because he was the only one who could speak and understand German.  An Isselman has been at the helm of the bank ever since.  The bank survived the Great Depression, was held up twice, in 1936 (Dillinger Gang) and again in 1946. Neither was ever solved.

State Bank of Newburg (SNB) worked without power for 10 days during the 1976 ice storm, and is surviving the present economic downturn.  The bank operated out of the original bank building until 1965, when a new bank was built a block away on Main Street. When they outgrew that building, they moved to the present facility along Highway 33 in 2000.

We have gone from the horse and buggy era to the present computer-nuclear age. SNB's present total assets are $155,000,000 and are well capitalized at 13.44 percent.  The State Bank of Newburg still remains your friendly, independent, sound bank, accepting business on a sound basis and is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2011.

On Friday, the bank hosted a pig roast lunch at the bank. Those attending were primarily the folks who call State Bank of Newburg "their bank." Staff and board directors of the bank served pasta salad, fresh fruit salad and delicious pork sandwiches prepared by Schwai's. Bank patrons came from Newburg, Kewaskum, Waubeka, West Bend, Jackson, Saukville and many other communities in the greater Newburg area.

While eating, guests enjoyed music and received SNB bags, keychains, clips, children's coloring books about saving, and cake!
