Gov. Walker: Budgeting for the Next Generation

Scott Walker: Heading into the next budget we are in the unique position of having anticipated surpluses, increased revenue, and projected economic growth.

Each week Gov. Scott Walker delivers his weekly radio address. This week’s radio address is titled Budgeting for the Next Generation. Here is the transcript: Hi, this is Scott Walker. Last week, the Department of Administration released revenue projections and provided an update on the current state budget.  The State of Wisconsin is projected to start fiscal year 2013 with a $342.1 million balance, which is the largest opening balance since fiscal year 2001.  On top of the positive opening balance, we are projected to deposit $125 million into the state’s rainy day fund.  For the first time in history, Wisconsin will deposit funds into the rainy day fund in two consecutive fiscal years.  Heading into the next budget we are in the unique …

What's Cooking

Soup Up: Homemade Everything Adds Dose of Health to the Pot

Cooking doesn't have to be an overwhelming task. In fact, with a little planning and some solid recipes — homemade foods will easily and tastily land on your table.

Though I have always been into cooking and baking my own food, it took me until after college to really dive into the hobby — and now I'm dead set on a mission to turn hobby into every day lifestyle. It took me until after college because that is when, sadly, I could finally afford to purchase and consume the foods called for in the recipe books on my shelves. Sure, the occasional souffle, homemade soup ... even some roasts ... made my menu plans during my student years — but things have greatly improved since I have joined the world of regular paychecks. It doesn't have to be expensive to eat healthy and whole foods — but it is easier when your budget is flexible. In the past couple years, my boyfriend and I have made a serious effort to …

'Unbelievable' Community Support Makes Great Things Possible

Because of an outpouring of support, the county extended the exhibit commemorating the Civil War Draft Riot in Port Washington to last throughout November — and a special thanks is in order.

Editor's note: The following is a letter submitted by Ozaukee County Administrator Thomas Meaux. Saturday, November 10 2012 we commemorated the 150 year anniversary of the 1862 Civil War Draft Riot that occurred in Port Washington, WI. What a fascinating story within the context of the political turmoil and tumultuous culture of the time. Many of those involved were immigrants, unable to understand why the government was making them fight, in many cases having fled from conscription in Eastern Europe. Consider language and other cultural barriers, along with the ability of some fellow Ozaukee citizens to “buy” their way out of the draft for $300; it is a bit easier to understand the eruption. Thank you to hundreds of Ozaukee folks that …

Gov. Scott Walker's Thanksgiving Message

In his weekly radio address, governor thanks Wisconsin's volunteers, especially those who helped out victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Here is a transcript of Gov. Scott Walker's weekly radio address, which aired on Wednesday. Hi, this is Scott Walker. This year, Tonette and I are glad to have our oldest son, Matt, home to join with our other son, Alex, and our parents as we enjoy the blessings of our family on Thanksgiving Day. We are so very thankful for our family and friends. It is also a time to again say thank you to the many people in our state who volunteer to help others in our schools, at senior and community centers, in places of worship and so many other locations across Wisconsin. And a special thanks to those who went east to help recover from Hurricane Sandy. Finally, we say thank you to all of our men and women who proudly serve in the military. To them, …

Again Paul, read the letter from Mike Huebsch to Kathleen Sebelius. The paragraph you keep wanting to claim as a smoking gun reads: "As indicated below, this letter is to certify that Wisconsin WOULD have a budget deficit, based on generally accepted accounting principles, during state fiscal years 2012 and 2013 IF the maintenance of effort requirements under section 1902 (gg) applied in …   more ›

Gov. Walker: Have a Safe, Fun Deer Hunting Season

Gun season begins Saturday in Wisconsin for deer hunting.

On Thursday, Gov. Scott Walker delivered the weekly radio address. This week’s address is titled Hunting in Wisconsin. Hi, this is Scott Walker. Opening day of the nine-day deer season is right around the corner. To keep the tradition alive, we need to share stories and the experience of the hunt with the next generation.  This year, I am urging hunters to introduce someone new to hunting.  We’ve made it easier and cheaper for new individuals to try hunting — first-time hunters can now try out the sport for a discounted rate by purchasing a First-Time Hunter’s License through the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).  Since many people don’t have private land, we are making it easier to hunt by opening private land up to the public.  This…

Letter to the Editor: Ozaukee County Administrator Extends Thanks to Community

County Administrator Thomas W. Meaux thanks the community and all involved in the recent commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the 1862 Civil War Draft Riot.

Gov. Walker: Honor Vets Who Fought Hard for Democracy, Freedom

As we look forward to celebrating Veterans Day and 2012 as the Year of the Veteran we will continue to focus on honoring our Veterans by doing all we can to help them secure good health, security, and happiness when they come home.

Gov. Scott Walker delivered the weekly radio address titled Honoring Veterans. The following is the transcript from his address.  Hi, this is Scott Walker. As we look forward to celebrating Veterans Day and 2012 as the Year of the Veteran we will continue to focus on honoring our Veterans by doing all we can to help them secure good health, security, and happiness when they come home.  Beyond just words our state is taking action to show how much we appreciate their service. So far this year, we’ve held 16 job fairs for veterans, connecting hundreds of employers with veterans looking for work.  This week we partnered with VETansfer to launch a program focused on growing on veteran-owned business startups. Beyond helping veterans create …
