After taking a trip to the 9/11 Memorial, Sara reflects on what was missing at the memorial site and what is missing today.
Every morning I wake up to a giant framed photograph of the New York City skyline. On the opposite wall in my bedroom a canvas showing off Central Park greets me. In my small, two bedroom flat, I have no less than 14 photos of my favorite city adorning my walls. New York is art to me. A simple snapshot can bring on countless daydreams. Romantic ones. Successful ones. Awe inspiring ones. New York City is a place of dreamers and compound history. It's a place of tall state-of-the-art buildings built beside 200-year-old cobblestone roads. It's steel, it's green, it's red, it's white and it's blue. But for a moment 11 years ago all that stopped. New York City wasn't a place dreams were made of, it was a place nightmares were scared of. Eleven…

A roundup of the latest activity also includes a veteran seeking special treatment and an after-bar party.
While drunken munchies is not an uncommon experience, not everyone who's hungry after getting intoxicated also ends up getting a ride in a cop car because of it. Employees at Pizza Hut, 1021 N. Wisconsin St., called police at 8:49 p.m. Sunday about a customer who had ordered a pizza inside the restaurant. The 33-year-old Port Washington man was intoxicated, and employees were afraid he was going to leave Pizza Hut without paying for his pizza. The man was given a ride home. More from the reports:

Residents speak out on important local issues.
Letters to the Editor can be submitted by e-mailing Lyssa.Beyer@patch.com. The term community is often defined as "a group of interacting people, possibly living in close proximity, and often refers to a group that shares some common values and is attributed with social cohesion within a shared geographical location." According to this definition, the people of Port Washington are a community. Focusing on the term, "common values," most people would agree that Port Washington values its families, children, senior citizens, police workers, fire workers, all first responders and those who are and have served in the military. Then, why is it that Port Washington, other than in separate schools and churches, did not come together as a …

More than 170 firefighters from around the state participated in a stair climb raising money for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
It was an exhausting test of strength, and it took some rests, but the more than 170 firefighters that participated in a stair climb in remembrance of fallen 9/11 firefighters at US Bank Sunday morning were inspired by their patriotism and the courage of those who lost their lives 10 years ago today.
Veterans groups, firefighters, police officers, scout groups and citizens from throughout the area marched in silent tribute to the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

On Thursday, Port Washington-Saukville Patch brought you the story of Joe and Joan Groh, who spent much of 9/11 wondering about the whereabouts of their son, Bill, a cardiologist and electrophysiologist who was attending a conference in New York. The Grohs did not know the exact location of the conference, and — for all they knew — Bill could have been in the towers, Joe said. The morning went by, but nothing seemed to be moving. "Everbody's eyes were glued to the TV," Joan said. "We did nothing." By the afternoon, the Grohs finally learned from Bill’s family that he was OK — and "OK" was all they needed to know, Joe said. Their story and so many others reveal how the events of 9/11 have affected people across the United States and the …

On Sunday, 169 Wisconsin firefighters will climb the steps of the US Bank building to honor the firefighters that lost their lives on 9/11.
One hundred ten stories. It’s the height of the World Trade Center towers, and the distance 169 Wisconsin firefighters will climb Sunday to remember the 343 firefighters who died in the towers ten years ago. “It’s a memorial that costs me something,” Milwaukee Fire Department Lt. Jordan Ponder, who organized the event, said. “I have to be sweaty, get worn out, have some determination out of me. That will ensure that I will never forget.” The 9-11 climb is a nationwide commemorative tradition, but this will be the first year that Wisconsin firefighters participate. One of the first problems Ponder faced in planning the event was where to find 110 stories in Milwaukee. The solution: climb to the 23rd story of the downtown U.S. Bank building …
The happenings that will commemorate the 10th anniversary.
No one can deny the intensity of emotion in the air as we near the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedies. Many innocent lives were lost that day that will not be forgotten. To honor those individuals, visit one of the many events going on in the area. Bel Canto Chorus and Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra are giving a free "United We Stand" Concert commemorating the 10th anniversary in Cathedral Square Park, downtown Milwaukee, beginning at 3 p.m. Religious leaders will also offer reflection along with a prayer flag ceremony starting at 2 p.m. Further west will be "Waukesha County's Remembering September 11th." This will take place at 11:55 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at St. John's Northwestern Military Academy in Delafield. More events to attend on …

Port Washington resident Joan Groh didn’t even think twice about flying shortly after Sept. 11, 2001 — but the events that occurred that day will always remain in her mind. Groh, and husband, Joe, spent much of the day wondering about the whereabouts of their son, Bill, a cardiologist and electrophysiologist who was attending a conference in New York. The Grohs did not know the exact location of the conference, and — for all they knew — Bill could have been in the towers, Joe said. The morning went by, but nothing seemed to be moving. "Everbody's eyes were glued to the TV," Joan said. "We did nothing." Nothing except answer the constantly ringing phone, calls from family members concerned about Bill. By the afternoon, the Grohs finally …

@Denise Konkol...I don't understand your inference with this comment:"This explains why none of the commenters who have no shortage of words to hurl against each other (Ruble, Hoffa, etc.) have uttered a word here." I haven't commented at all on this piece.   more ›
