Liquor Law Approved With Little Discussion

The Port Washington Common Council approved an ordinance Tuesday that changes the requirements for applying for a new liquor license.

It was with very little discussion that the Port Washington Common Council approved an ordinance that changes the requirements for applying for a new liquor license for a business in the city during its Tuesday night meeting. "The ordinance that you have in front of you is essentially unchanged from our last meeting," Ald. Dave Larson said while introducing the ordinance Tuesday night. The council had discussed changes to the ordinances during its late February meeting, alterations made after meetings with business owners and addressing their concerns. City Administrator Mark Grams and Main Street Executive Director Sara Grover had not heard any further concerns about the ordinance after that meeting; the law was approved unanimously. The …

Camera Requirements Changed in Rewritten Liquor Ordinance

The Port Washington Common Council re-introduced a liquor license ordinance during its meeting on Tuesday.

After a number of meetings and drafts of a new liquor license ordinance in Port Washington, officials re-introduced the law on Tuesday with City Administrator Mark Grams saying "there doesn't seem to be any objections," from businesses this time around. The ordinance requires new businesses to offer a plan of operation as well as security plan before a liquor license application can be approved, but business owners were concerned about requiring cameras and how the process affected ownership changes, particularly within the family. The reworked ordinance allows for family members or employees involved in the business for more than one year to be exempt from submitting a plan of operation for a new business when taking over ownership; it …

Broadway Popcorn, a gourmet popcorn store with one location already in Sheboygan Falls, will open its doors in Port in late spring.

A gourmet popcorn shop is planned as the new tenant in the remodeled building of the former Brewmeister's Trading Post space. Broadway Popcorn, a gourmet popcorn company with one retail location already in Sheboygan Falls, hopes to open its doors to the public on May 1, according to an Ozaukee Press article. Though the shop specializes in mostly popped corn, it will also carry some unpopped popcorn, including products from nearby Fireworks Popcorn. "Broadway Popcorn Company specializes in fresh-popped popcorn in a wide variety of sport and beautifully designed tins and packaging," according to the company's website. How Can Businesses Find Success in Port's Downtown?

With empty storefronts and recent business closures, area residents offer ideas about Port Washington's business sector. What is it that's keeping some business thriving in this city?

With the recent closing of Mobocracy in Port Washington's downtown and several other buildings that sit empty, the key to success in this city is open to debate once more. Port Washington officials often speak of the emphasis on rebuilding Port's economy and creating a more thrivent downtown. Businesses come and go in Port, causing some to lose hope in the notion of ever having a bustling city center. But others are confident in the business environment in Port, pointing to established businesses and citing a need for more proactive business owners. "Port Washington has many successful businesses and some of them were right across the street from Mobocracy," Amy Gannon wrote on a Patch article about Mobocracy closing. "Those businesses …

Kwik Trip: A Boost to Competition, or Something Saukville Doesn't Need?

Readers offer mixed reactions on Saukville's Plan Commission's decision to deny the conditional use permit the company was seeking in order to build their store closer to a wetlands area than current ordinances allow.

Editor's note: This article has been updated to reflect a clarification. A large majority, not small, of Facebook comments on Patch's original article about Kwik Trip's permit supported having the business open. Saukville officials recently took a vote that blocked Kwik Trip from opening its business in the village, and Patch readers reacted with mixed support — though a large majority did jump to Kwik Trip's side. "I totally approve this," Doug Niemeyer wrote on Facebook. "The problem is I may have been the only community member at the meeting to speak up. (The) room was full, but with all the small businesses that don't want Kwik Trip because it will make them look bad and create competition that they can't handle." Four Plan Commission …

Kwik Trip: ' We Will Eventually Be There'

The village of Saukville's Plan Commission denied the conditional use permit the company was seeking in order to build their store closer to a wetlands area than current ordinances allow.

Kwik Trip is facing a large roadblock in launching a gas station and convenience store on land the company recently acquired in Saukville after the village's Plan Commission denied a conditional use permit because of environmental concerns — but company officials say they plan to fight the decision made by the village. Four commission members voted against Bob Hamann's motion to "approve the (permit) because ... enough evidence has been presented here that any type of spill or encroachment on the wetland areas is not going to be significant."  While commissioner Richard Belling agreed, commissioners Mike Krocka, Roy Willhelm, Don Brock and Village President Barb Dickmann were not convinced it wouldn't be a risk, offering the dissenting …

There's still plenty of room for competition here. I frequent Beck's because they usually have a great supply of Kalypso lemonade and teamonade, and my kids really like that. If Kwik Trip doesn't carry those, Becks will remain a destination solely for that reason. If you have kids, you'll already know its frequently much more "convenient" to hit a convenience store than go all the way into one of…   more ›

Readers Say 'Yes' to Dog Park in Port

Officials have checked out a few viable spaces to add a dog park in Port Washington, merely opening the door to a conversation about adding such a place in the city. Where do you think is a good place to add one?

The idea of adding a dog park to Port Washington sparked plenty of excitement and "yes" answers from Patch readers. "I think a dog park in Port Washington is an absolutely wonderful idea!" Betty Fields-Mueller wrote on Patch. "I currently take my dog to Grafton and would love to be able to take her somewhere closer to home." Mayor Tom Mlada and other officials have begun tossing around the idea of adding a dog park in the city, checking out a few possible places to have the park but looking for feedback from the community before moving forward. The idea is to have the space be a city-owned park, but run and funded mostly by volunteers interested in the cause.  Nearby dog park options are fairly limited: many people head to Muttland Meadows…

Officials Sniff Out Dog Park Location Options

Port Washington officials have checked out a few viable spaces within the city to add a dog park, and are seeking feedback from the community on the idea.

With both resident dog owners and potential visitors to the city in mind, Port Washington Mayor Tom Mlada and other officials have begun tossing around the idea of adding a dog park in the city. "It's a quality of life thing, where people love their dogs and want (to get out with their dogs)," Mlada said. "Frankly, it's another draw to the city."  Mlada said officials have checked out seven possible locations — narrowing their focus on three — but are really hoping for feedback from the community before making any moves. "(I'm) just opening the door to this discussion, I really believe that there are enough dog owners that are interested — similar to the (Hales Trail Community Garden)," Mlada said, adding that the idea is to have the space…

Would love to see a dog park in Port. Muttland Meadows in Grafton is nice - not overly controlled. Proof of vaccines, screening process, etc might be overthinking it a bit. Big dogs especially need a safe place to run off leash for awhile. Hope to see it happen. Any chance one of the locales is near the lake?   more ›
