Tasting Event Raises $810 to Benefit Cancer Group

One Book, One Community: A Taste of Giving Back featured samples from local businesses and plenty of raffle prizes.

A fundraising event on Saturday raised $810 to benefit This Star Won't Go Out (TSWGO), an organization that helps families who have teens or children diagnosed with cancer. A Taste of Giving Back — sponsored by the Port Washington-Saukville Patch, W.J. Niederkorn and Oscar Grady libraries as part of the annual One Book, One Community program — was held over the weekend at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, and included a lot of support from local businesses. The event featured samples from local businesses as well as raffle prizes, valued all the way up $155. The following businesses donated their resources to make the event possible: TSWGO also takes nominations for families in need, and anyone in the Port Washington and Saukville area is …

A Patient Helping Patients: Teen with Cancer Creates Charity, Ripple Effect

Emma Rose Paulson, diagnosed with cancer as a teenager and now in the maintenance phase of her treatment, launched a collection program to brighten the day of other cancer patients and families during their hospital stays.

As a teenager diagnosed with cancer, Emma Rose Paulson found herself spending time in and visiting the hospital on a regular basis. The life-changing experience wouldn't leave her in a state of negativity, though; instead, Emma was inspired to launch "A Patient Helping Patients," a charity that donates comfort items to cancer patients and their families, ranging from lip balm to nail polish as well as activities or movies to pass the time. "Since my diagnosis, many people have helped my family and me in many ways. Now, I want to do something to give back. I want to help other kids with cancer who are also being treated at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin," Emma wrote on the Facebook page for the organization. The first delivery to hospital…

Saturday Tasting Event Helps Teens, Families Dealing with Cancer

The One Book One Community: A Taste of Giving Back event will take place April 20 in the Thomas Jefferson Middle School cafeteria to benefit the organization This Star Won't Go Out.

Inspired by this year's choice for the One Book, One Community program, Patch as well as the W.J. Niederkorn and Oscar Grady libraries are organizing a tasting event to benefit This Star Won't Go Out (TSWGO), an organization that helps families who have teens or children diagnosed with cancer. The rare tasting fundraiser event will feature samples from a variety of local businesses, and costs $10 to enter — all of which will benefit TSWGO. Bracelets supporting TSWGO will be sold for an additional $5, also to benefit the organization. A $5 suggested donation is asked for kids under 10 years old; children younger than 3 are free. Honor Flight DVD Donation Benefits Cancer Patient's Cause

Emma Rose, a 17-year-old girl undergoing cancer treatments, has been putting together donation baskets for other cancer patients, and Stars and Stripes Honor Flight is donating to the cause.

Editor's note: The following information has been updated to correct the source of the donation. The Stars and Stripes Honor Flight will be part of an area cancer patient's efforts to help others suffering with the disease at the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Energy Foundation has donated 100 DVD copies of the Honor Flight documentary to support the efforts of 17-year-old Emma Rose, a cancer patient who launched the donation effort to help cancer patients. Joe Dean, founder of Stars and Stripes Honor Flight, shared parts Rose's message in regards to her efforts: "It has been a tough year, but I am finally starting to feel better. $10K Donation Benefits YMCA's LiveStrong Program

Bruce Krier, a graduate of the program built for helping cancer patients, donated the $10,000 which will fund LiveStrong for two years. Krier was a LiveStrong participant at the Feith Family YMCA in Saukville.

After announcing his $10,000 donation to a Feith Family YMCA program that works with cancer patients and survivors, Bruce Krier broke into tears talking about the importance of LiveStrong and the impact the YMCA has had on his life since he started his own cancer treatment. Krier, of Mequon, admitted he hadn't really been a member of the Y until early in his treatments when he joined the LiveStrong program in Saukville.  LiveStrong is "a physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals," according to the Feith Family YMCA website. Cancer Patient, 4, Meets Justin Bieber

Updated, 5:05 p.m. Sunday: Hailey Roser, 4, has met Justin Bieber. Despite Children's Hospital being on lockdown because of the Brookfield mass shooting, she was allowed to leave the hospital and she met Bieber Sunday afternoon. "Dreams come true," tweeted her family from the account @HealingHailey. A Waukesha Patch Twitter follower told Patch that Hailey's ambulance arrived in Milwaukee for Bieber's concert. "I am here with my daughters and the ambo with Hailey got here about 15 min ago," tweeted @brianokeefemke. UPDATED: Funeral Services Set for Eric McLean, Who Passed Away After 10-Year Cancer Battle

Eric McLean, 28, posted an emotional YouTube video titled, "Eric's Confession - Final," last week after learning his cancer had relapsed and no treatments would stop it this time.

Updated 12:30 p.m. Aug. 28: Visitation and funeral services for Eric McLean will be held this weekend in Two Rivers, according to his obituary posted on Legacy.com. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Sept. 1, at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, 3218 Tannery Road, Two Rivers. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Aug. 31 and from 8 until 10:45 a.m. Sept. 1, also at the church. Since McLean's passing, a number of people have offered their condolences and support to his family and friends by reaching out on the L.I.F.E.
