The annual study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation pegged Ozaukee County number one of 72 counties in Wisconsin.
Ozaukee County is ranked the healthiest in the state through the fourth annual County Health Rankings, published by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. This is the third year Ozaukee has ranked the highest of the studies four years. Ozaukee's neighbor, Washington County, ranked No. 10, while Milwaukee County was ranked second-to-last healthy at 71 of 72 total counties. The study ranked each county by data in the following areas: Ozaukee County reports lower percentages in smokers, excessive drinkers, obesity and physical inactivity than reported elsewhere in the state, helping it gain its lead in the Health Behaviors category. A 24-year-old Milwaukee man faces felony charges for homicide and delivering drugs in the death of a 24-year-old Grafton man earlier this year.
A series of text messages between an Ozaukee County man and an alleged drug dealer have led to homicide charges in connection with the area man's fatal overdose. Joshua Gray, 24, of Milwaukee, was charged in Ozaukee County Court on Monday with felony charges of first-degree reckless homicide and delivering drugs. If convicted, he faces up to 40 years in prison and fines of $100,000. A $75,000 cash bond was set during his initial appearance on Monday. The victim, Riley Knapp of Grafton, was found unresponsive when a friend stopped by to check on Knapp after not hearing from him for some time at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 3, according to the criminal complaint. Jaron S. Omon of Port Washington was sentenced on Monday in connection to the accident that took the life of 37-year-old Kelly Phillips, also of Port.
The driver of the car in a one-vehicle crash that killed a Port Washington woman in June was sentenced to 9 years in prison on Monday in relation to the incident. Jaron S. Omon, of Port Washington, plead guilty in September to the charges of homicide by intoxicated use of vehicle in the death of 37-year-old Kelly Phillips. Omon's preliminary blood test showed a .22 blood alcohol content. In court on Monday, his defense attorney said his guilty plea showed he had taken responsibility for his decision to drive drunk, according to JSOnline.com. With a new chapter opening in my life, memories of those the community has lost resurface. This is not a moment to take for granted.
My house has been chaos for a couple of weeks now. There could ultimately be a lot of reasons chaos would occur in a two-bedroom upper half of a duplex, but the reason this time around is that my boyfriend and I have become homeowners. I'm surrounded by boxes as we speak. It's a bittersweet moment in life — I'm excited for our new pad (I even bought address labels that say that) but also nostalgic for the time I've had in this apartment. While reminiscing, a thought flashed into my mind that I just couldn't ignore. I remembered doing a story about Port's Eric McLean, who died not even two months ago after a 9-year battle with cancer. A former priest at St. Joseph Parish in Grafton was killed Wednesday while riding a bicycle in Fond du Lac County. Fr. Vic Capriolo served St. Bernard from 1992-98, according to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. According to the Associated Press, Capriolo was crossing the Highway 151 bypass on the Prairie Trail when he was hit by a car driven by a 74-year-old woman. Capriolo, 67, died at the scene. Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the one-vehicle crash that killed Sara Pujanauski of the town of Saukville on Saturday morning.
A 19-year-old town of Saukville woman is dead after a one-vehicle crash in the town of Fredonia early Saturday morning. A memorial near the crash site has been started with flowers and some personal effects. Visitation and a funeral mass will be held Saturday at Divine Savior Parish, Holy Cross Chapel in Holy Cross, according to an obituary published in Tuesday's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Police pronounced Sara Pujanauski dead at the scene of the one-vehicle crash on County Highway I and Belgium Kohler Road on Saturday morning, according to Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office dispatch. The body of Miles Leppla, the 91-year-old Cedarburg man who mysteriously disappeared after being seen driving away from his home one evening in October, was pulled from a pond in Germantown on Wednesday. The vehicle was pulled out of a pond after a property caretaker had reported a vehicle in the water on Wednesday, according to JSOnline.com.
