Come, Sit, Stay: Fostering Dogs to Enrich Many Lives

When thinking about adopting a dog or puppy to join your family, options other than traditional animal shelters do exist.

I consider my decision to become a foster "parent" to dogs as part of the Tailwaggers 911 program one meant to enrich the lives of many. For starters, the fact that I am able to open my home on a temporary basis to this animal on Saturday will save the life of a 3-month-old labrador retriever mix otherwise fated to be put down because of a lack of space at the high-kill shelter it's currently housed in in Georgia. Secondly, Mara, my 1-1/2 year-old Vizsla dog — who has now finally given way to a nap out of sheer boredom after staring at me and whining to play for much of the afternoon — will greatly enjoy the ability to expend some energy with another four-legged critter while I Patch away. Third, the family who ultimately adopts little …

Port PD: Neighbor Worries About Idling Car, Driver on Cell Phone

A roundup of recent activity from the police blotter also includes a mailbox being hit and a misdialed 911 call.

Oh, the dangers of being behind the wheel looking at a phone. Police received a call at 6:34 a.m. Nov. 21 in the 900 block of West Lincoln Avenue, when a resident noticed a vehicle that had been running for approximately 30 minutes, according to police reports. It was found that the vehicle owner was on her phone checking Facebook and texting around the corner from her residence, the report said. She told police that she did not want to park in her driveway, because she feared her dog would bark and wake up the neighbors. More from the reports:

Port PD: Kids Throwing Rocks at Raccoons

A roundup of animal activity from the police blotter also includes a loose dog and a dog disrupting the garbage truck driver.

This is a weird one, and perhaps it's a good thing the kids were actually not just sitting in front of the Playstation/Wii/Xbox/you-name-it — but this is not a very good alternative. Port Washington Police responded to a call at 6:37 p.m. Thursday about a group of young children in the 100 block of East Prospect Court. The kids were throwing rocks at raccoons near a bunch of garbage bins. The kids were warned and police spoke to their parents. Apparently they have no idea what raccoons are capable of. Ken, I absolutely agree, unless the dog is doing bodily injury to the human or the dog is in immediate harms way, the police shouldn't be troubled with that issue. Maybe we should have animal control officer in Ozaukee County? The Humane Society have resources in how to train your puppy and or dog, but they are not ASPCA...lol. There are other issues that is pressing in the Port Washington area …   more ›

A Port woman living on South Spring Street called police at 7:33 a.m. Wednesday to report her flag and 40-foot collapsible flag pole missing. The resident believes it was stolen overnight, but there are no known suspects. So much for flags and fireworks. More from the reports:

Submit Your Photos for National Puppy Day!

Let face it, nothing puts a smile on your face like looking at a cute puppy. Show off photos of your adorable puppy!

It's your puppy's day to shine! What makes today so special? It's National Puppy Day. According to the website, since its start in 2006 National Puppy Day celebrates the magic and unconditional love puppies give us, but "more importantly, it's a day to help save orphaned puppies across the globe and educate the public about the horrors of puppy mills, as well as further our mission for a nation of puppy-free pet stores." Puppy mills are breeding facilities that produce puppies without concern for their physical, social or emotional needs, according to the Wisconsin Humane Society. Usually the puppies are sold to the public through the Internet, ads or pet shops. The site says, "Dogs from puppy mills are inbred or overbred, and receive …

Puppy Mill Law Benefits State, Ozaukee Humane Says

New legislation aiming to lessen the amount of puppy mills across the state became effective June 1, and state animal shelters are preparing for an influx of pets.

It's a doggy-dog world out there, and in some areas of Wisconsin its starting to get a little more doggier. That's because dog breeders and shelters are now under stricter rules from the state as legislation regulating breeders and sellers in an attempt to stamp out puppy mill practices became effective June 1. "Really it’s benefits (are) all around, especially from the dog’s point of view," said Angela Speed, director of development at the Ozaukee Humane Society. The law, enacted in December 2009, requires breeders and shelters that sell more than 25 puppies from more than three litters to obtain a license from the state that can cost anywhere from $250 to $1,000.  Requiring these licenses from the Department of Agriculture, Trade and …

Wow — thanks for pointing that out! Google search "doggy dog" and sure enough, it shows up under lists of "most mispronounced words/phrases." But it also shows up under several other modes of search — including a song by Snoop Dogg. AP Style doesn't include either phrase. I guess this one is to be determined, but either way, thanks for visiting Patch!   more ›
