Donations Key in Purchase of New Grand Piano

The Port Washington-Saukville School District music department purchased a lightly used grand piano after donations of $62,000. The department hopes to offer the piano for use by local piano teachers and for evening piano concerts.

The Port Washington-Saukville School District music department can now hit some new notes after the purchase of a new grand piano. The piano, which cost $62,000, was purchased through funds raised with the "Key contributors" program, music teacher Dennis Gephart said, which includes local businesses, family, alumni and supporters of the Port Washington-Saukville music program. "It's in emaculate condition," Gephart said of the lightly used piano,"it hasn't left the original person's house since it moved in." A brand new grand piano can cost $100,000 or more. The old grand piano was sold for $6,000 to Jefferson High School, and Gephardt said money from that sale will be used for upgrades in the auditorium. The first concert using the piano …

Program Offers Families New Furnaces — for Free

Nominations for the Heat U.P. Wisconsin program will be accepted through Saturday for families deserving a new furnace at no cost.

A coach for the Saukville Rebels as well as Port Washington Piranha Youth Wrestling Club, Junior Rosado gave his time to these teams as a way to be along side his kids as they compete as well as an outlet for giving back to the comunity. Never did he expect to be paid for such volunteerism — but little did he know someone was watching, and his community-oriented way of life earned his family a brand new furnance installed in their home at no cost, whatsoever. Rosado and his family were one of 70 households to received a free furnace last winter through the Heat U.P. Wisconsin program. Lennox furnace dealers in Southeastern Wisconsin as well as in upper Michigan participate, donating furnances with free installation to selected nominees. …

A new report by The Chronicle of Philanthropy ranks Wisconsin 44th out of 50 states in charitable giving. The Milwaukee area fares little better, with a donation rate of 3.9 percent it clocks in at 42nd out of the country's 50 largest metro areas.

Wisconsin ranks near the bottom in charitable giving across the country, and the Milwaukee area is no different, according to a special report by The Chronicle of Philanthropy.  The report, America Gives, analyzed IRS data to determine the rate of charitable giving across states and metro areas, and compared that with the states’ political leanings and the prevalence of religion. America Gives was released today. Wisconsin was 44th out of the 50 states, and Milwaukee 42nd of the 50 largest metro areas. School Supply Drive in Need of, Well — Supplies

The fundraiser held annually at St. Peter's Church in Saukville to gather school supplies for children in need is struggling to get donations this year.

After giving away nearly $10,000 in school supplies last year, local fundraiser organizers say the supply drive is struggling to gather donations this time around. Bethel Metz, one of the organizers, is working with Mark Gierach of the Saukville Community Food Pantry as well as BMO Harris Bank in hopes of garnering more awareness of the need in the area — and collecting more donations. "Our donations are really down this year, unfortunately, and we could really use the help," Metz said. BMO Harris Bank made a $500 donation in support of the initiative, and will be collecting supplies at the Harris Bank and M&I Bank locations in Ozaukee County, according to a press release from BMO Harris. Visit harrisbank.com or mibank.com to locate a …

Bad Wiring Suspected Cause of Wednesday Fire

Thomas Jefferson Middle Schools and students, along with a neighbor, are working to collect money for the family that lost their home and two dogs in a fire in Saukville on Wednesday.

Bad electrical wiring is the suspected cause for a fire that caused extensive damage to a Saukville family's home on Wednesday, killing the family's two dogs. The State Fire Marshall concluded that the faulty wiring in combination with some dry wood caused the fire, Saukville Fire Chief Gilly Schultz said, adding that he is waiting for that same conclusion from the insurance company before it is confirmed as the official reason for the fire. None of the Quade family members were home at the time of the blaze in their single-family house at 665 W. Whitegate Drive, said Saukville Police Chief Bill Meloy. While Meloy did not go inside the house, he called the damage "extensive." The family has been staying in an area hotel since the fire, and…
