Volunteers will set out to help Bette Langford and Becky Luedcke of the Blue Heron Artisan's Gallery and Heron Bay Banquet Hall fix up the historic fire engine house building so that the business can open by June.
Volunteers with the Port Washington Main Street Program and the Port Washington Fire Department will be donating time to help owners of the new Blue Heron Artisan's Gallery and Heron Bay Banquet Hall get the exterior of their building ready for opening by beginning of June. Work for the project will take place from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday, and volunteers are welcome to learn more by contacting the Main Street Program office at 262-268-1132. Port resident Bette Langford and her daughter, Becky Luedcke, are remodeling the former fire engine house, 102 E. Pier St., to open the businesses. The 3.5 percent increase in pay closes the gap on comparable salaries of other area full-time chiefs, as well as makes up for extra hours the chief puts in, officials say.
Port Washington Fire Chief Mark Mitchell will see an increase in his salary after city officials decided the raise was appropriate based on comparable salaries of other area full-time chiefs. Mitchell's new salary, after a 3.5 percent raise, is $81,212. City Adminstrator Mark Grams said the increase also accounts for night hours Mitchell puts in to attend required training sessions, as well as his extra work with the paramedic service that Port added last summer. The Port Washington Common Council approved the raise after a recommendation from the Police and Fire Commission. Grams said the raise will have no impact on the budget because Mitchell has worked to secure a lot of grant funding to help pay for equipment and other necessary …

Breakwall scare on Monday teaches several lessons, among them the need for safety signage.
A tragedy was averted Monday, by brave people who make it their business to be prepared. Everyone used their heads, except perhaps the guys who were caught out on the breakwater. But I am the last person on the planet who should point a finger and ask, "What were you thinking?" I spent a whole night under that lighthouse when I was 13 years old. "What was I thinking?" you may ask. Look at all those stars! Hey beer doesn’t taste so bad after the first sip or two. I wonder if we’ll catch hell from Mom and Dad. Mom will be upset. I have to concur with my esteemed colleague. The breakwater needs some help. Inviting an out of town guest to accompany me for a stroll along its potholed length, just a couple days before these folks had their brush with the Great Lake, we were both taken by surprise by a wave from nowhere which turned into a wall of water alongside us...and a strong gust that shoved it over our heads.
