When Does Lent Begin?

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and runs up to Easter.

This year Lent commences with Ash Wednesday, February 13 and lasts until Holy Thursday evening, March 30.  Lent is marked by many Christians in the 40-day run-up to Easter. Often considered a time to practice sacrifice, many Catholics for years gave up eating meat on Fridays. Check out our Readers Choice list for Best Fish Fry in the Port Washington and Saukville area, as well as a list of churches in the area.  McDonald's also recently rolled out its new nugget-sized filet-o-fish just a week before Lent. What about you — are you planning to give anything up for Lent? Tell us in the comment section below.

Check in with this list of good local places to find a fish fry, or to find a new place to enjoy some good seafood in the Milwaukee area.

The lenten season may be ending, but that doesn't mean Friday night fish fry cravings are anywhere near long gone — and Patch would like to help you figure out where to go. In a "Best of" contest that asked readers weigh in on their favorite places to go for fish, The Patio Bar & Grill came out on top as the number one place to go in Port. The other top two contenders included: in second place, New Port Shores; in third place, Victor's Pier Street Shanty. Other places in the contest include: the American Legion (located across from Veterans Memorial Park in Port); J'Sports Bar & Grill in Saukville; and St. Peters in Port. And the Best of contest wasn't limited to just Port Washington and Saukville — here's a roundup of the best places to …

Patio & Grill In Port, I would not take my dog there. The contest had to be fixed. We went as a group. The place is dirty and noisey. New Port Shores in the back dining Room is the best of the three. Service at Patio & Grill also stinks, unless you know the watress.   more ›

Readers Choose The Patio for Best Fish Fry

After a weeklong competition with several strong contenders, The Patio Bar & Grill pulls ahead for the win.

It was a tough competition, with top three finalists sitting neck-and-neck most of the race, but in the end The Patio Bar & Grill pulled ahead as the readers' choice for Best of Fish Fry in Port Washington and Saukville. The other top two contenders included: in second place, New Port Shores; in third place, Victor's Pier Street Shanty. "I’m just glad everybody enjoys our fish, we try to do our best and evidently we are," Junior Uselding of The Patio said. Uselding purchased and remodeled the building two summers ago, adding the patio and expanding the dining area inside, and opening on July 1, 2010. "I've always liked the building and the location," he said. In determining the winner, Patch considered a number of items, including poll …

@Chillywater — We realize the poll is not scientific, and were hoping to just have some fun with this contest. In the end, all three of the restaurants in this portion of the contest were very strong contenders! I'm going to have to do a fish fry tour now ...   more ›
