Special Day Honors Angel Tello for Library Donations

The W.J. Niederkorn Library Board is honoring Angel Tello, owner of Tellos Grill & Cafe, for his charitable contributions to the organization with a special day of his own.

The W.J. Niederkorn Library Board is honoring Angel Tello, owner of Tellos Grill & Cafe, for his charitable contributions to the organization with a special day of his own. Friday, April 26, will be recognized as Angel Tello Day; it is also the next  After Hours Movies at the library — an event that is largely the reason for Tello's award. Tello started bringing snacks to the movie event that takes place on select Fridays citing memories of tough times as inspiration for his decision to provide free food. He's been bring food from his restaurant for about a year. "We've done three movies so far, (and) he's brought a different spread every time," said Annie Bahringer, Adult Services coordinator for the library, told Patch in October. "We …

Angel Tello is a model citizen. He's a business owner who is genuinely concerned for his community and not just his own business or reputation. He and his family participate in Christmas on the Corner and it is a wonderful thing to see. I do my best to give them my business as often as I can when I visit port.   more ›

Still Own a VCR? It's Your Lucky Day

The Oscar Grady library is trying to make some room for more DVDs — find out how.

While checking out movies at the library has never cost money, usually the item comes with a due date. Not this time, as the Oscar Grady Library in Saukville is giving away its VHS collection so it can expand its DVD selection. "To make room for more current, updated DVDs, the Oscar Grady Public Library will be giving away our entire VHS collection free of charge on a first come, first served basis," according to the village's newsletter.  Movies will be on display Feb. 5 to 7 during regular library hours, the newsletter said, and will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. PD Report: Kids Skip School and Hit Up Library

A roundup of the latest activity from the police blotter also includes a sleeping drunk, a backup accident and a loud argument.

This seems like an unusual choice of getaways when skipping school, but at least it had the potential to be just as productive as the classroom. A 15-year-old Port boy and a 17-year-old Fredonia girl were noticed walking along the east side of the auditorium at 10 a.m. Sept. 18 during school hours, according to Port Washington police reports. Turns out, the two had skipped school to visit the library, and were attempting to sneak back in. They were both issued a citation for truancy. Also, a pack of cigarettes was found in the girl's backpack, and she was issued a citation for underage tobacco. Sounds like an expensive library trip. More from the reports:

Talk about roughhousing. Port Washington police responded to a call of a fight at 8:34 p.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of North Wisconsin Street. The police encountered two 30-year-old men, one 26-year-old man and a 27-year-old man in the roadway, but rather than fighting, they were playing. Football. Police advised the group to play in the backyard rather than the street. Didn't their parents teach them that? More from the reports:

Beat the Heat: Port, Saukville Have Your Cooling Needs Covered

Area libraries offer free ways to escape the heat, including a hands-on reptile exhibit later this week.

The weather outside might be hot and humid, but that doesn't mean hiding in air conditioning indoors is the only way to cope, according to Saukville resident Sara Nelson. What is she doing on this near-90 degree Monday? "Sitting outside with my daughters, enjoying the breeze," she wrote on the Port Washington-Saukville Patch Facebook page. "We have central air, but I hate sitting in the house if I don't have to. We also have a small pool filled up if it gets too hot later." Others are finding themselves stuck indoors without a choice, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. "I am at work in a climate-controlled environment," posted Julie Russell, who lives in Port Washington and works at Cardinal Stritch. "You won't hear me complaining …

Editor's Eye

Drum Roll Please: And the Winning E-Reader is ...?

Patch editor spends a week getting to know the ups and downs of four e-readers now available for use through the W.J. Niederkorn Library.

My initial reaction to e-readers generally takes the form of the death-be-told sentiment that lurks in many newsrooms these days, often hovering more specifically over the copy desk, as newspapers struggle to stay afloat considering the abundant news for free online. That may sound funny coming from the editor of a free, online newspaper, but Patch was hardly a twinkle in someone's eye years ago, when, there I sat: fresh out of college and working as an intern, attending not just one, but several, layoff "goodbye" parties. Mind you, I was working as an online intern for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which I guess puts me as part of the problem. And though e-readers threathen to take away the very page of the paper from the books I love …

Taking a look at the e-readers, too, I loved the Sony. I liked the way it felt in my hands versus some of the others. The touch screen was a plus and the screen was easy to read. The only thing I didn't like about it was the flashing between pages, but I did get used to it. Plus, The Help is on the library's Sony. I read it in five days. I didn't want to put it down!!   more ›
