Liquor Law Approved With Little Discussion

The Port Washington Common Council approved an ordinance Tuesday that changes the requirements for applying for a new liquor license.

It was with very little discussion that the Port Washington Common Council approved an ordinance that changes the requirements for applying for a new liquor license for a business in the city during its Tuesday night meeting. "The ordinance that you have in front of you is essentially unchanged from our last meeting," Ald. Dave Larson said while introducing the ordinance Tuesday night. The council had discussed changes to the ordinances during its late February meeting, alterations made after meetings with business owners and addressing their concerns. City Administrator Mark Grams and Main Street Executive Director Sara Grover had not heard any further concerns about the ordinance after that meeting; the law was approved unanimously. The …

Port Liquor License Laws Strengthened in Shadow of Foxys' Closure

The Port Washington Common Council introduced an ordinance on Tuesday night that would require a business plan as well as security plan from applicants hoping to obtain a liquor license.

Modeling the changes in large part on Green Bay's alcohol licensing process, the Port Washington Common Council on Tuesday night introduced an ordinance that would require both a business plan and security plan from applicants hoping to open an alcohol-related business in Port. The idea to strengthen the alcohol license ordinance sprouted after the closure of Foxys Bar and the controversial denial of a license to hopeful business owner Troy Koput that followed. City Attorney Eric Eberhardt read the proposed ordinance to the Common Council during its Tuesday night meeting. "This is a draft, to talk about or agree or disagree with  — but it's a starting…

Is Another Bar Necessary in Port Washington?

As hopeful business owner Troy Koput continues to meet opposition from city officials on the opening of Deville's Lounge in the former Foxys Bar location, the question arises: how many bars are too many?

Troy Koput has found many obstacles in the path to open tries Deville's Lounge in Port Washington — from building code violations to a long police call history at the former Foxys Bar location to an outright recommendation from the police chief that a liquor license be denied. City Administrator Mark Grams has also suggested that officials are looking for a different type of business to fill the spot. "How many (bars) does a city of our size have to have?" Grams said, adding he would prefer a restaurant-type bar where the primary focus would be on food to open in the now vacant space. To attempt to answer such a question, here's a look at how many liquor licenses exist in Port Washington and surrounding areas compared to the population of …

i believe that if you are going to take the time, the effort, and the money to do something.. you should be allowed to do it without the city harassing you and making sure that you do it "their" way. I agree with Gregs comment about the tacos... maybe this guy just doesn't like to enjoy a drink or two, so he would prefer not to have a bar in there. Well 90% of port washington likes to drink so if…   more ›
