Dad at Bat for Patch's Youth Baseball Team

Get to know the coaches of Patch’s Port Washington Youth Baseball team.

For Saukville’s Troy Russell, the decision to coach youth baseball was as simple as watching the joy his son gained from the sport. This year, the father of three stepped up to the plate to oversee the Port Washington Brewers, the team sponsored by the Port Washington-Saukville Patch.  While supervising his team warm up, Russell explained that baseball is his son’s favorite sport, and that he was the primary reason he decided to become involved in running the team this year.  He also recognized the hard work done by other parents provided in years prior.    “I admired the parents that stepped up,” he said. Little League Season Hits Port

Port Washington Little League teams have started playing games, and Patch will be following its sponsored team — the Brewers.

The Brewers of Port Washington Little League played against the Cubs on Tuesday night at the Dunwiddie Elementary field. The Brewers lost after the Cubs scored an extra run in the final inning, making the score 7 to 8. This was the teams' first game. The Port Washington Little League teams are made up of  fifth-graders through either-graders who come from mostly Port Washington and Saukville. Port Washington-Saukville Patch has sponsored the Brewers and will follow them each week. Stay tuned for updates.

Dancing in the End Zone

It seems good leaders know a thing or two about not getting over zealous, and maybe our government is starting to learn that, too.

I played baseball as a kid — Little League. The first year my team eked out a few victories, but mostly we were stomped upon by older kids; twelve-year-olds with attitude and the first signs of chin fuzz.  You would think the age mix would be similar from team to team. After all, it was an ages 10 through 12 league. However, my neighborhood buddies and I all signed up together, and we all happened to be the same age. Our first coach was a dad from two streets over. He was a growler who seemed to see our shortcomings as a personal affront.  "What’s the matter with you?" he might yell.  "All you had to do was step on the bag for the force out." Kids generally don’t respond well to negativity, but we were taught to be respectful of adults, so…
