55,000 Viewers Later: Honor Flight Film Continues to Make History

Director Dan Hayes, a native of Wauwatosa, remembers the "electricity" in the air when the documentary set a record for largest film screening in history over the summer — and looks forward to continuing on with the film's journey.

After a second stint back on the big screen in Marcus theatres across Wisconsin, the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight documentary has touched the lives of more than 55,000 viewers, Honor Flight officials say. The Stars and Stripes Honor Flight Facebook page is chock full of comments from people in the Milwaukee area who saw the film this week, offering gracious praise about the power of the film's message. "I believe people recognize that —  in a way — these heroes are the new Ghost Soldiers. Now you see them, now you don't," Stars and Stripes Honor Flight founder Joe Dean said. Dad served in the South Pacific during WWII. He died this past April just 10 days short of his 96th birthday. Three naval officers presented us with an American flag and a wonderful gun salute at his grave site. It was so appropriate and touching. I'm very glad that Honor Flight is happening now, as there just aren't many of these noble veterans left. God bless America and all it stands for!   more ›

Thousands Show Up for Honor Flight's Big Screen Premiere

The Stars and Stripes Honor Flight documentary is playing at select Marcus Theatres across Wisconsin through Friday, and it's first day was a big hit.

At least 2,000 viewers visited Marcus Theatres on Wednesday for the premiere of the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight documentary on the big screen, organization officials estimate. "Over 1,000 students have seen the film here in WI now ... on Day 1 ... not counting Madison ... not counting nonstudents," founder Joe Dean said. The estimate includes a total of 500 students throughout Ozaukee County, according to Port Washington-Saukville School District Superintendent Mike Weber. The youth's attendance is part of the Honor Flight's secondary mission to bridge the gap between the veterans and younger generations.
