Couple Hopes 'Lucky Dog Park' Will Open in Port

The Port Washington Plan Commission will discuss the proposal from local business owners Bob and Ellen Paulus for a private dog park on Thursday night.

Having spent nearly 20 years working in greyhound rescue, Port Washington business owner Ellen Paulus is ready for the opportunity to provide responsible yet fun exercise options for area dog owners. "We have a lot of experience with handling large groups of dogs due to (our work in greyhound rescue)," she said. Ellen and her husband, Bob, of Paulus Printing, 1270 Mineral Springs Dr., have long offered what they called "playdates" for other greyhounds to run at their business — sometimes with 20 or 30 dogs. "The biggest thing for me is that I want to provide an area where dogs can exercise and run around, but in a safe environment." I prefer option number three, the Muttland Meadows model. Muttland Meadows, Inc. Dog Park is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization that exists solely on donations from its patrons for its financial support. But I am not against a business having a private for-profit park. 60-Unit Apartment Development for Port Tabled Following Aesthetics Concerns

A proposal for a five-building, 60-unit development on the northwest corner of East Sauk Road and Harris Drive has been tabled while the developer makes it more aesthetically pleasing to members of the Port Washington Plan Commission. The proposal by Premier Real Estate Development met opposition last night by some members of the Plan Commission who objected to the aesthetics of the proposal and the density of the project for a stretch of road that they said they’ve been trying to make an attractive entryway into the city. After over two hours of discussion, the Plan Commission tabled action on the $3.5 million project pending potential changes by the developer. So here will be the entry to Port Washington's southern end...Apartments, vacant commercial property, a Jail complex, more vacant commercial, more apartments and then throw in a trailer park. We need more Greystone-like or Single Family condos to promote an ownership mentalilty rather than apartments with a transient population.
