Port-Saukville Not Only District to Consider End to Voting in its Buildings
The end of voting in Port Washington-Saukville school buildings has created mixed reactions among Patch readers, but the district is not alone in this decision.
As school officials inch closer to a formal vote on the end of voting in school buildings, Patch readers remain split on whether this was actually a necessary discussion. "This is good. I don't think the public should be IN our school buildings during the day at any time," user Amitiel wrote on a Patch article. "The red tape you have to go through on any other day to gain access to your child during a school day should be enough to determine that this is a good decision not to allow the public inside a school on a regular school day without even normal security measures." The tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut stole 26 lives and again opened the door on conversations about gun control and mental health. But another topic that has emerged is security in schools, and whether we are doing enough to keep children safe. Following the shooting, the National Rifle Association advocated arming teachers and stationing armed guards in schools. High School Launching First-Ever Robotics Team
The Port Washington High School is seeking community mentors to help with a variety of aspects of the Robotics program.
Editor's note: The following information is taken from an e-mail sent by Port Washington High School Principal Eric Burke. The Port Washington High School will be having the first-ever Robotics team at the school this year. The team will be led by Alec Belling and Ryan Volke, and sponsored by Rockwell Automation. State Superintendent Announces $7 Million Plan to Phase Out WKCE Tests
The proposal would replace the current high school assessment system with a four-test ACT suite that would be given to high school students starting in 2014-15.
The Wisconsin Department of Instruction is hoping to usher in a new era of learning and assessment at every high school in the state. State Superintendent Tony Evers on Wednesday announced a proposal to replace the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examination (WKCE) with a suite of ACT assessments to measure student learning and better prepare the state’s youth for post-secondary education careers. "This is really a historic day in Wisconsin," Evers said. "We’re moving to a different place in the state, and we need to make sure every student is adequately and significantly prepared for their future careers." Port Football Team, Community Honors Tyler Buczek
The players and community showed their support for the family of 15-year-old Tyler Buczek, who died swimming in Lake Michigan on Sunday.
The Port Washington High School freshmen football team took the field on Thursday for its first game since losing player, teammate and friend Tyler Buczek to Lake Michigan. The players and community showed their support for the family of 15-year-old — who died while swimming in Lake Michigan — by releasing balloons into the air as well as giving Buczek's mother, Kim, roses in his honor. The Varsity Dance Team also performed at half-time to support Buczek and his family. Many in the crowd wore either green or blue as a way to honor Buczek, and buttons with a photograph of the teen were also passed out. Dozens of area schools are in a competition to receive Target gift cards. “Together we're giving K-12 schools up to $10,000 each in Target GiftCards® for books or any supplies they need,” states the Target Facebook page. “You can help by voting for a school each week. Rally your friends because for every 25 votes a school receives, Target will send a $25 gift card.” The closest area Target is in Grafton, 1250 N. Port Washington Rd. As a first-grader in the Port Washington-Saukville School District, Jenny did not want to go to school. The drive to school would sometimes end with Jenny locking the doors to the car — with herself inside and her mother on the outside — as an attempt to avoid heading to classes for the day. When Jenny — not her real name — was finally out of the car, the screaming and crying did not stop as her mom said goodbye and sent her to school for the day. Jenny was the victim of a bully. In an early incident that school year, the bully cornered Jenny in the bathroom and threw her against the sink, leaving her with bruises. My child is bullied in the Port Washington School District. Because it is not physical, I suppose, is why emails to the vice principal, the principal and the superintendent went UNANSWERED. When you tell your child to report it to the teachers when it occurs, does it? No. The child knows tattling makes it worse because the school is LAX in discipline. Port-Saukville District Sees 10 Percent Drop in State School Revenue
Aid cut in 97 percent of districts statewide, despite growing numbers of students in suburban areas.
State aid to the Port Washington-Saukville School District will drop a little more than 10 percent from last year, according to figures released Friday by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The district will receive $12,980,588, compared to $14,430,278 in 2010-11, a drop of $1,449,690. Statewide, 97 percent of districts saw a drop in state aid, according to the DPI. The state's biennial budget cut overall general aid to schools by 8.4 percent. The aid is based on final official enrollment counts figured on the third Friday in September. In the Port Washington-Saukville School District, this was an increase of 27 students, as reported in the Ozaukee Press. Increasing student numbers seem to be the trend in Milwaukee suburban …

I hope Jim realizes that us professionals and labororers out in the private sector have faced the same issues of paying into our retirement and insurance benifits while enduring pay freezes and give backs over the last 30 years.
