Port Washington resident inspired by Saukville event to create similar rummage sale in city.
If you're on the hunt for a good bargain, you may want to hold off until June 1 — when residents in Port Washington will participate in the first city-wide rummage sale. More than 50 families have signed up to participate in the event, which will last from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., according to organizer Chris Afplin. Afplin said she was inspired to create the city-wide rummage sale based on a similar event held in Saukville in September. "I often wondered why Port never had anything," she said. "I just tried to find what I thought would be a good weekend to have (it). For June 1, that's like the fist day that there wasn't anything going on (as far as other festivals and events)." Afplin contacted the Port Washington Historical Society for …

There's still time for Saukville residents to add their house to the list for the 2nd annual Village Wide Rummage Sale hosted by Saukville Area Historical Society.
The philosophy of "one man's trash is another man's treasure" is what organizers hope inspires shoppers to attend the 2nd annual Village Wide Rummage Sale in Saukville. The Saukville Area Historical Society is hosting the event on Sept. 10. "We have a good time," said Anne Kertschner, president of the Saukville Area Historical Society. Village residents are encouraged to register their address for the rummage sale through the Historical Society for $5, which will include their location on a map being distributed to shoppers. The registration fee covers advertising and printing costs for the maps. The deadline to register your home is Sept. 6. While historical society members hope to see a profit from hosting the event in future years, that…

With the season of rummage sales well under way, its a great time to find some unique items — but also to remember, it's the hunt that counts.
I stopped at a rummage sale on Friday, checking for cool stuff before the weekend crowd arrived. It pays to get in early. My personal Holy Grail of rummaging is a certain type of musical instrument manufactured prior to WWII, which I will never find. I know the odds are hugely stacked against finding one, nonetheless I will keep on searching. It’s the hunt that counts. Along the way I run across intriguing artifacts of American consumerism. Some speak to me. On Friday, I spied a Hot Wheel Car carrier, replete with spoilers, flashing lights, engine sounds and a back up beeper. It looks like a tricked-out, eighteen-wheel car carrier, the ones used to deliver new Chevy’s and Fords to the dealerships. I bought it — I have a grandson on …
