Kwik Trip Fights for Saukville Location

The company will appeal Saukville Plan Commission's decision in January to deny a permit that would have allowed them to build on the location near a wetland.

When Saukville officials made a decision in January to deny a permit Kwik Trip needed to build in the village, business officials vowed the gas station and convenience store would "eventually be here." Kwik Trip officials will stand in front of Saukville's Board of Zoning Appeals at 6 p.m. May 16 to appeal the Plan Commission's decision, according to an Ozaukee Press article. The commission had voted against a conditional use permit that is necessary for the business to build because the location is less than 600 feet from a wetlands area; Saukville's ordinance requires the 600-foot distance. "The village has been, for quite some time, changing the ordinances simply to keep us out," Hans Zietlow, director of real estate for Kwik Trip, told…

Don't really care if it would or would not. I am a believer in the free market. They should be given a chance to compete, and the Market will decide. Protectionism is a big part of what wrecked our downtown in Port.   more ›

Flood Watch: Saukville Officials on Alert in Case of Emergency

After last week's rains brought up to 5 inches of rain and flooding to some areas, another 2.5 to 3.5 inches is expected through Friday. Check Patch for updates on flooding and weather forecasts.

Saukville village officials are on alert for potential flooding, monitoring river levels with sandbags ready to go — if needed. "We've just entered what's called the alert stage," Emergency Management Director Jack Morrison said. "(The weather service has) downsized the forecast since earlier in the week. We're just watching, we have no flooding right now." The National Weather Service issued a Flood Watch that took effect noon Wednesday, and continues until 7 a.m. Friday, according to Patch's media partners at WISN 12 Weather.  A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts. You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be …

Brat Fry Benefits Saukville Ambulance Department

The Saukville Lion's Club is hosting the brat fry to help the village purchase new defibrillators.

A Saukville Lion's Club Brat Fry on April 27 will benefit the village's ambulance department as a fundraiser kickoff for the purchase of new defibrillators.  "(The defibrillators) are 15 years old, and the manufacturer is not going to supply parts for them if we have problems," ambulance director Shari Kirsch said.  The fund raising is helpful because "because our budgets are so tight right now," she said. The village is looking to purchase two Medtronic Lifepak 15 defibrillators, which will cost a total of about $80,000, Kirsch said. The village had plans to replace them in the next three years, so the change by the manufacturer of the old one's has good timing. Kirsch said the defibrillators are used quite often, especially on runs with …

Flood Watch Returns With up to 3.5 Inches of Rain Expected

If it seems like we've been here before, we have — after last week's rains brought up to 5 inches of rain and flooding to some areas, another 2.5 to 3.5 inches is expected Wednesday to Friday.

Apparently the memo hasn't gotten to Mother Nature to turn off the tap, as Wisconsin emerged from its drought, only to face flooding last week and again this week. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch that goes into effect noon Wednesday, and will continue until Friday at 7 a.m., according to Patch's media partners at WISN 12 Weather.  A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts. You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop. Another area of moderate to heavy rain is moving into the southern half of Wisconsin, adding as much as 2.5 to 3.5 inches of rain to …

Joe Voiland Wins Port Washington By Narrower Margin Than Overall Vote

Newcomer Joe Voiland ousted incumbent Tom Wolfgram in the Ozaukee County Circuit Court race during Tuesday's election. Here's the breakdown of how Port Washington and Saukville voted in that and other statewide races.

Challenger Joe Voiland will take over for Judge Tom Wolfgram in Ozaukee County Circuit Court, grabbing 62 percent of the county's vote in Tuesday's election — but his support in Port Washington wasn't as high. Wolfgram grabbed 46 percent of Port Washington votes, losing to the challenger 1,073-930 there. In Saukville, voters followed county trends, giving Voiland 398 votes versus Wolfgram's 246, taking 62 percent of the vote. Wolfgram has held the position in Branch 2 since 1994, but knowledge that Wolfgram signed the petiton to recall Gov. Scott Walker sparked controversy, according to a JSOnline.com article, and was apparently enough to scare away voters. Voiland has consistently pointed to Wolfgram's support of the recall as a reason to…

Ambulance Rates to Go Up in Saukville

The increase makes the village's fees more in line with that of surrounding communities.

Saukville officials approved an increase to ambulance rates citing a need to keep at pace with surrounding communities' rates. Saukville residents in need of an ambulance will pay a $500 basic call rate, up from $425, according to an Ozaukee Press article. Nonresident rates increase from $500 to $600. The increase was suggested by LifeQuest, a company that both Saukville and Port Washington work with to handle ambulance billing needs. Lifequest lists Port's basic rate at $525 for residents and $600 for nonresidents; Port Fire Chief Mark Mitchell said Port's paramedic services might add up to higher costs, depending on the type of service used. Saukville Fire Chief Gilly Schultz said maintaining similar rates is important because both Port …

Development, North Beach Top Wish List for Port and Saukville Improvements

Earlier this month we asked what you'd like to see improved in Port Washington and Saukville and the answers that came in the comments and on Facebook include larger business and destination establishments and easier access to the beach.

Earlier in January we asked Patch users what they would like to see improve in Port Washington and Saukville in 2013. Some of the suggestions that came through include more destination establishments, larger stores and restaurants, development off of exit 100 by Sentry and easier access to North Beach. Here's what people had to say on Facebook and in Patch comments: Greg Huegerich: Both cities could benefit from more "destination" establishments. Places that will lure visitors from outside the area. Both cities also need to be more accepting of new investors and less "protective" of existing businesses. Ike: It would be nice to see either city open up to let in more business that aren't normally in this area. Would be nice not to have to …
