How Are You Reacting to the Cold Start to Spring?

The argument on global warming starts ... now. Because you can't really get outside and do much anyway.

Almost a week into the official start of spring, stubborn snow mounds and frosty temps running about 15 degrees below normal are reminders that winter is hanging on here in southeastern Wisconsin. And don’t look now, but the forecast through the end of the month hardly budges, with high temperatures expected to be 41 or less every day. Aside from the usual argument about global warming this sort of cold snap brings about, how are you handling long winter season? Vote in our poll and discuss in the comments.

I'm pretty much use to the weather being inconsistent in Wisconsin, but i do wish it would start warming up more!   more ›

Have You Seen This? Port Washington-Saukville on YouTube

A WWII Memorial dedication slideshow, winter trout fishing and driving in a blizzard — remember those? — all are featured on the popular video uploading website.

In these days of cell phone cameras and user-friendly editing software, everybody's a producer. Or can be. And YouTube is the medium of choice for millions of people, including some right here in Port Washington and Saukville. Did you miss the addition of a WWII memorial to the under-construction Coal Dock Park? User Richard Diener uploaded a video slideshow of photos from the event. Miss the snow? This video shows user Angie Cope driving to downtown Port after a snow storm; it hasn't looked like this in a while! Even though it's winter doesn't mean the fishermen go dormant: check out this video by Peter Miller of winter trout fishing, and see what they catch! Did you recently take a video doing something exciting in Port or Saukville? Add…

Farmers Market Offers Chance to Win Christmas Tree

Organizers of the Port Washington Winter Farmers Market are hoping to spread the holiday cheer by offering the chance for three people to win a voucher toward a Christmas tree.

Organizers of the Port Washington Winter Farmers Market are hoping to spread the holiday cheer by offering the chance for three people to win a free Christmas tree. Attendees of the next two markets who spend $15 or more will receive a raffle ticket that will enter them in a drawing for a $30 voucher towards a purchase of a Christmas Tree. The voucher is good at the tree lot outside First Congregational Church, where the market is held. "We believe in small businesses. We believe in supporting local producers and artisans," organizers wrote in a release about the market. "The raffle is very inclusive. Anybody can be a part of it, and anyone can win a tree voucher." The Port Washington Winter Farmers Market is in its third year of operation…

UPDATED: Roads Still Slippery Friday Morning, But Still no Accidents

Port Washington plow crews planned to hit the roads at 2 a.m. to continue keeping the streets clear for residents.

Winter is back. Snowblowers, shovels and car scrapers have been out in full force, and that includes plenty of hours put in by the Port Washington plow crews. The plow crew remained on duty for most of the evening on Thursday, getting back to work back bright and early at 2 a.m. Friday, Port Washington Street Commissioner Dave Ewig said late Thursday afternoon. Ozaukee County dispatchers did not report any major accidents Thursday night or Friday morning (as of 6:30 a.m.) in connection with the weather, but warned drivers to continue to be cautious as roads there are some slippery patches out there. The storm may not have quite brought the predicted 7 inches, but at least it showed up this time. The National Weather Service calls for a 50 …

Contemplating the Meaning of Life is Harder in the Cold

There may not have been much snow this season yet, but that doesn't stop winter from being full of gloomy, non-inspirational days.

I’ve been thinking about the meaning of life and decided winter may not be a good time to do it. The weather was getting too bleak earlier in the week. It’s hard to have inspirational thoughts while scraping a windshield. Like my car battery, my personal battery gets drained. It’s easier to be optimistic in spring, for sure.  I get bewildered driving to work in the morning, seeing kids walking to school without a jacket, wearing a "hoodie" instead.  Maybe they don’t have a jacket?  Maybe they have three, but a "hoodie" makes a statement or gives the wearer "street cred." Belt-less, falling down pants (FDP) are another source of wonder. I’ve been told the fashion statement emulates and honors "those who have served," — time in jail that is…

Is passing judgement on how others live and then segwaying about how your generation is better harder in the cold also? Gotta love these amateur philosphers who feel compelled to share their hackish, ramblings with their community.   more ›

UPDATED: Port Plow Crews Ready for Potential Snow Fall

Despite near record-low levels of snow and record-high temperatures this winter season, the area is finally expected to see several inches of snow falling through Friday.

It's been a strange winter, with an abundance of sunshine, lack of snow and most days feeling more like spring. Between Madison and Milwaukee, we’ve received less than five inches of snow, which puts this year in the top 20 of having the least snowfall since the 1800s when they started tracking temperatures. Don't be fooled, however. The National Weather Service predicts that Port Washington and the surrounding area will be hit with 3 to 7 inches of snow by Thursday night, with less than one-inch of extra accumulation on Friday. "It sounds now that it's going to be midmorning tomorrow (Thursday) and now we’re talking I think 5 to 7 inches," said Port Washington Street Commissioner Dave Ewig. "Certainly at this point all of our salters are …

The Teachings of a Twitching Squirrel

Local Editor Lyssa Beyer focuses on the little things about spring as Port Washington comes to life.

If the lingering cold weather wasn't so obviously reminding me how much I'd like it to just be summer already, my yard seems to have been dotted with a reoccurring mini-version of Groundhog's Day. Now, I'm pretty sure February was months ago, but every morning this week I've woken up, peeked through the curtains looking to the yard below and what did I see? Some sort of ground-prairie creature, sitting on its hind legs perched outside its one-of-several entrances to its home below an area otherwise known as my yard. The little guy just stares at me, whether I'm looking down at it from my window or the patio just off my bedroom. It even has the audacity to remain staring as I leave my house, watching me as I step off the porch, to the …

It looks like a chipmunk! We had them a few years ago. They're all over the Milwaukee County Zoo grounds as well. Have noticed many more birds passing through last week, the Baltimore orioles are feasting on my oranges, red breasted grosbeaks have been in the yard and a bird with a yellow head that I can't ID. Go out around 5-515 am and listen to the birdsongs, they fill the air!   more ›
