Port Waves Goodbye to Maritime Fest

Photo gallery reflects on a weekend full of water-based fun at the Port Washington Maritime Heritage Festival.

Only one tall ship remains in the Port Washington harbor as the Port Washington Maritime Heritage Festival came to an end on Sunday. The fest filled the Port Washington Marina and harbor area from Friday through Sunday, featuring tall ships, craft items for sale, educational and historic activities and displays, two music stages, harbor tours, children's activities, food and beverage vendors and fireworks. A Cardboard Boat Regatta also made its debut as part of the fest on Sunday. Check out these photos and video, as well as a detailed list of category winners and race times.

Sorry, thank you for noticing that! I had made the change to reflect the correct name of the ship in a different photo featuring Niagra but overlooked this one!   more ›

Cardboard Regatta Rescheduled to Sunday

Potential for rainy weather causes Cardboard Boat Regatta organizers to cancel Saturday afternoon's race.

Rainy weather Saturday morning has delayed Port's first Cardboard Boat Regatta until Sunday. "From what I am seeing now (about the weather) — (it) doesn't look good for the boats or safety of the individuals," and e-mail from race organizer Dan Laurence said. The race is the first of it's kind scheduled to set sail in Port Washington as part of this weekend's Maritime Heritage Festival. The festival continues as planned through Sunday. The Cardboard Boat Regatta will now begin with judging and viewing at about 1 p.m. Sunday near the inner harbor of Port’s marina. Boat races start at 2 p.m., launching in the boat launch area of the marina. Awards are expected to be given at 3 p.m. Patch Local Editor Lyssa Beyer has been busy building a …

Whatever Floats Your Boat: Teens Take on Cardboard Challenge

Group of Port high graduates, students have been working hard to build their boat as part of the Cardboard Boat Regatta.

It’s coming down to the wire for participants of the Cardboard Boat Regatta as part of the Port Washington Maritime Heritage Festival. That’s right — cardboard boats — something not seen on the water too often, and exactly the reason one group of teenagers decided to take to the task of building a boat for the race. "It’s not every day you get to build a cardboard boat," said Eric Gardner, a 2011 Port Washington High School graduate. "This is a first time for all of us — it’s been a fun experience." The festival runs Friday through Sunday, with the boat race on Saturday, as long as the weather cooperates. Gardner is building the boat along with Port High sophomores Dan Gardner and Callum Toal and fellow 2011 Port graduate Jake Mueller. The…

All Hands on Deck: Cardboard Boat Race Sign-up Deadline Extended

Port Washington will see its first annual Cardboard Boat Regatta during the Maritime Heritage Festival in August.

I'm still afraid my boat is going to sink — but at least now I know I won't be the only one in the water after a meeting Saturday of the participants in the first annual Cardboard Boat Regatta. Patch is building a boat as part of the race during the Port Washington Maritime Heritage Festival on August 20, and there's still room for more boats to sign up — applications will be accepted until Saturday. For those of you who don't know what a Cardboard Boat Regatta is, it involves sailing boats made completely of cardboard — straight up, regular corrugated cardboard, not this wax-coated water-proof stuff — and floating for, according to Port's rules, 175 yards. Other supplies you can use include glue, duct tape (but only for the seams) and …

I don't specifically know of any, but I'd bet you could contact teachers in the technology departments in the schools and find someone! All staff contacts are listed under the "Staff" section on the school's website, though I'm not sure how easy it is to get ahold of anyone over summer. Maybe try the school office .... Patch Boat to Float for Cardboard Regatta

Local Editor Lyssa Beyer part of team to compete in the Port Washington Maritime Heritage Festival's Cardboard Boat Regatta; entries accepted until Saturday.

This may surprise some people, but I've paddled a kayak on Lake Michigan. It wasn't my favorite thing to do, and the minor ups and downs of the waves (I refuse to go if anything is what they call, "breaking") did start to make me sea sick. Go figure. I did it because my boyfriend, Nick Schmidt, is a kayak nut. He's the crazy person some of you readers have probably seen launching his slim-and-easily-tippy (in my opinion) kayak from South Beach, loaded up with fishing poles and a few extra lures. Yes, he's brought back some salmon and some trout a few times, and it's made quite the meal — but I still think he's crazy. Fortunately, he's not alone — I've seen lots of people launch their boats through what is lately the muck of South Beach, …
