What Would You do With $40K?

Dannelle Gay of Operation $40K will visit W.J. Niederkorn on Feb. 16 for a free event to share her tips and tricks on extreme couponing that has saved her $55,000 since 2010.

A Racine-based woman who's had success with extreme couponing will share her tips and talents at a free event at the W.J. Niederkorn Library in February. Dannelle Gay of Operation $40K will be at the library from 10 a.m. until noon Feb. 16, teaching Coupon Clipping 101 class, where attendees will "learn where to get coupons that you will use, how to organize them, and most importantly, the right way to use them," according to her blog. The event is sponsored by the library and free to the public. Gay began her Operation $40K nearly three years ago in an effort to save money for her family. "I had an 'a ha' moment on March 18th of 2010 (when I started this blog)," Gay writes on Operation40k.blogspot.com. "My goal was to save $40,000 in one …

City Outsources Job as Way to Save Money

After a lab technician retires from the wastewater treatment plant this year, city will use a commercial lab to do the majority of his work — saving about $30,000 annually.

The original version said the job was being eliminated from the Water Filtration Plant, when the job was actually eliminated from the Wastewater Treatment Plant. In these economic times, it's not surprising to hear about groups looking for ways to save money — and Wastewater Utility Supervisor Dan Buehler is among them. Beuhler presented the Port Washington Common Council with a plan on Tuesday night not to replace the retiring lab technician's position, but instead to solicit the use of a commercial lab for a portion of tests currently done at the Port Washington Wastewater Treatment Plant. The council unanimously approved Cardinal Environmental to do the work for $23,036 per year — a savings of…

@jak I reflected the building's correct name in the story, and I do see that you are right, the information from the council meeting refers to the job as being removed from the WWTP; In searching the phone book I see that the filtration plant is at 408 N. Lake St. and the treatment plant is at 450 N. Lake St. With the street under construction right now, I apparently didn't wander in far enough …   more ›

Tales from the Mothership

Be Green, Save Green — and All While Raising Kids

Money-wise tips from a mother of one with plenty of tricks up her sleeve.

With kids, it seems like there is always something to buy. Diapers, new clothes, toys. It can really add up, both for your pocketbook and the environment. As a self proclaimed "crunchy mom," I am always trying to find ways to not only save a little money but to make a little less of a dent on good ol' mother earth. One of the biggest decisions we made was that we were going to cloth diaper our son. So, after a little research because there are so many different styles, we decided to go with the bumGenius Organic All-in-One Size diaper. We chose this one because it seemed like the closest thing to a disposable diaper. There is no stuffing or folding, just swap out the dirty one for a clean one. The question I get most often is about …

Find online deals and daily coupons with SarandipitySaves.com

In the words of the great YouTube philosopher, Rebecca Black, "It's Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday. Everybody's looking foward to the weekend, weekend." Ummm....yeah.  Anyhoo...I'm Sara and I have a blast sharing daily fortuitous, frugal discoveries and showing you how to save at least 50 percent on nearly everything you buy. Today we're going over some great deals at CVS this week.  CVS is pretty straight forward with their coupon policy, it's basics and no frills or spills. They also have a rewards system similar to Walgreens' Register Rewards where they give you coupons at the end of your receipt which can be used like cash at their stores after you purchase specific products. At CVS it's called "Extra Care Bucks" and it is …
