Hey Lyle -
I thought you might be interested in my latest Retro Cinema Club feature, 'Country' (1984), which looks back on the Reagan-era mid-western family farm crisis of the early and mid '80's! The film actually takes a very liberal position towards many of Reagan's FmHA policies that effected many mid-western family farmers.
It can be found here:

Kind of hard not to just soak it up if you spend any significant amount of time out in Utah. I remember my first day in Salt Lake, my ex-fiancée took us to Temple Square to look at their Christmas lights and decorations. Across the street, a group of Baptists who were protesting the Mormons had gotten into a pretty heated shouting match with some Mormon Elders. Needless to say, the cops were eventually called to break it up. The next day, we went down and watched the latest propaganda film produced by the Church at the Joseph Smith Building – it was definitely an eye opening experience. I almost feel that I can now relate to what it must have been like living through the whole communist revolution in Russia – at least from the propaganda perspective anyway!
Yeah, I heard the whole "Rocky Mountain Jews" notion being kicked around by a few people out there. My counter always was ‘I prefer the Jewish Alps in the Borscht Belt region of the Catskills over in upstate New York.’ They always found that particularly confusing after discovering that I’m not even Jewish!
My only regret is that I never made it down to the Colorado City / Hildale area near Short Creek to get the full experience. I heard that place is really interesting, if you know what I mean ;-)
Lyle Ruble
5:24 pm on Thursday, November 17, 2011
How did you find Mormon theology? You ought to here the connections they attempt to make with Judaism. I had a number of them tell me that they were part of the "lost ten tribes" and considered themselves as "Rocky Mountain Jews".

Hey Lyle -
My ex-fiancée was from Utah and of the LDS faith. As her family still lives in Utah, I had the pleasure of spending much time in the greater Salt Lake valley.
I was actually raised a baptized and confirmed Methodist, however, I'm not really practicing any religion currently, other than believing in a higher deity and a majority of the Judeo-Christian values.
You're right - Utah is definitely an interesting place and unlike anything I ever experienced prior to spending the time out there that I did. As our engagement fell apart a couple years ago (she decided that she really didn't love me anymore) I haven't been back since. She broke my heart, so I don’t know if I ever will go back unless absolutely necessary.

Well if you knew that Lyle, why would you do something as ridiculous as challenge folks on the other side to show up to counter protest and suggest that if they don't, they're relaxing in their easy chairs? You're a smart guy Lyle, but you've got a bad habit of leaving low hanging fruit out there that just begs to be picked. Play the tape to the end before you post. That being said, good luck with your tests and I hope everything comes out okay.

Nate,
Actually Mussolini was the original fascist. He didn't practice the same kind of eugenic racism as Hitler and the Nazis. I am not focusing on Germans since I also would be consider German also. Not all Germans were Nazis or fascists. Neither were the Italians all fascists or the Spanish under Franco.

Lyle, being up on history, I would have expected such rubish from someone else. Fascism wasn't limited to Nazis. Mussolini was termed Fascist as well. I realize it might include the concept of a single race, but more often its definition is used loosely with the extreme level of control a government exhibits. You can leave this kraut alone.

NO I ASKED IF YOU WERE IN A CAMP!! NOT SOME STORIES OR ANY OTHER BS YOU CAN COME UP WITH. You my friend have done nothing, deal with it....
Lyle Ruble
10:13 pm on Sunday, August 7, 2011
Mark,
Yes I lost people to the camps. My family also fought in the war to defeat the Nazis. I worked in the voting rights movement in the South and got the hell kicked out of me a number of times, had dogs turned lose on us, and had fire hoses turned on us. I also served my country for nine years and served two deployments in S.E. Asia. I lost friends and was shot down twice. I have put my ass on the line for my country. You want to call me weak, that's your prerogative, but I'll tell you one thing, I do know what's right and good. You represent the worst of our species with your bigotry, selfishness and ignorance.

Nope, just can't stand people like you... BTW, were you in a camp, were you part of the slave trade, were you involved in the trail of tears? If your ancestors were I'm sorry. If not, please shut the hell up. I once sympathized with my friends on the left, now I find your fight old and tired. Your weak and will continuously pretend to 'fight the good fight' so you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Good luck with that.

Craig,
If you have noticed people have used the term recession and not depression. I have, on the other hand felt all along that this is a depression. I don't think that it is a double dip, but if you look at the Great Depression had periods where it looked like we were pulling out but then we back slid again. The Great Depression only ended when we entered WW II.
Like the Great Depression it started off with a financial collapse this is why we bailed out the banks. They didn't bail out the banks in 1930 and created bank runs. I don't think things will get much worse but things are going to limp along.
The national debt is manageable over time and things will not get worse.
Craig
9:53 pm on Thursday, August 4, 2011
@Lyle: Your comment to Nate: Anyway, what part of depression don't you understand?
I am just curious about your take on this issue...is this a depression in your opinion?
Or do you think the depression is coming?
Was today the start of the W effect? (double dip recession and market crash)
I ask because I am curious of your thoughts on this issue. I have been fearing the W effect for over a year, it has been my opinion that it would be much much worse than 2009.
Given the issues we have with our Nation's Debt, how can we handle a depression on top of that?
I just realized this belongs in your blog.
