Birthday July 8
Bio Lyssa Beyer graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire with 2 bachelor's degrees, one in Print Journalism and the second in Spanish. She interned in the online department for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and also spent a year as a copy editor for the Green Bay Press Gazette. Lyssa also wrote many articles as a freelance writer and reporter for publications in Florida and Minnesota. She maintained a blog about beer and microbreweries both while living in Milwaukee and Green Bay. These days, she still likes trying new beers, loves vacations and time spent at the beach or exploring nature and, as a health and exercise enthusiast, successfully completed her first half-marathon in May (more where that came from). She is also currently pursuing a Masters of Business Administration with an emphasis in Internet Marketing degree from the Florida Institute of Technology (don't worry, classes are all online, so I'll still be covering the news here!)
Your Beliefs
At Patch, we promise always to report the facts as objectively as possible and otherwise adhere to the principles of good journalism. However, we also acknowledge that true impartiality is impossible because human beings have beliefs. So in the spirit of simple honesty, our policy is to encourage our editors to reveal their beliefs to the extent they feel comfortable. This disclosure is not a license for you to inject your beliefs into stories or to dictate coverage according to them. In fact, the intent is the opposite: we hope that the knowledge that your beliefs are on the record will cause you to be ever mindful to write, report and edit in a fair, balanced way. And if you ever see evidence that we failed in this mission, please let us know.
Politics
How would you describe your political beliefs? I vote for the candidate that serves the community's best interests.
Are you registered with a certain party? No.
Religion
How religious would you consider yourself? I support any and all religions and/or beliefs.
Local Hot-Button Issues
What do you think are the most important issues facing the community? Port Washington and Saukville are communities full of history and character. The communities work hard to preserve their culture while still being part of the larger Milwaukee metro area. Programs such as the Character Counts initiatives between the two communities and the school district show off the pride the communities have for the type of people they create. Residents deserve to know what city and school officials are doing to uphold these standards, as well as be informed of unpredictable news and events happening in the community.

Lyssa,
Is 1000 words too long for an opinion piece?

Thanks for the advice! I've run two 5k's thus far in my life, so this will be quite the upgrade on mileage! I ran 10 miles last weekend and that nearly wiped me out!

First half marathon in May? I finished one and only one marathon years ago, a week after I turned 51. You've probably received lots of advice but I'll add...
Don't start out too fast. Don't quit.
Oh, and have a good time!
